A Naked Wines 'angel' has won the trip of a lifetime to mark the online retailer's sales topping £100m for the first time.

The milestone represents a 23pc rise on last year's figure of £81m, to the end of March 2015, and follows the company's acquisition by Majestic Wine in April 2015.

And customer Katy Johnson was the lucky angel – the term the company uses to refer to its crowdfunding investors – who took the company's sales into nine figures, in the process winning a visit to her favourite winemaker anywhere in the world for a tour and tasting.

The company said more than 300,000 mature angels, who have been customers for at least four months, were now supporting more than 100 winemakers in 14 countries.

Rowan Gormley, chief executive of Majestic Wine, said: 'Hitting this latest milestone proves once again that crowd-funded, social wine distribution can deliver brilliant outcomes for all our stakeholders at the same time.

'We will continue to invest in Naked Wines and remain very excited about the opportunities ahead for the whole group.'

Naked Wines, which employs 140 people in Norwich, offers investors the chance to buy wines at preferential prices in exchange for supporting independent winemakers.

Naked Wines managing director Eamon FitzGerald said: 'Achieving £100m in sales demonstrates that you can grow quickly while doing the right thing for everyone involved - from those who pick the grapes, to those who discover and drink our wines, to those who help make it all happen in our office.'

The company said the figure of £100m in sales was in line with market expectations for the financial year ending 28 March 2016. Last year, Majestic Wine's sales were £231m.

Naked wines is part of the EDP Top100 and a former Future50 firm.
