For this week’s Gig of the Week I highlight Coasts’ upcoming performance at the The Waterfront Studio, tomorrow night from 7pm
Gig of the Week is a new weekly guide to top gigs in and around Norwich. We want to hear what gigs you’re looking forward to and any tips you would give to rookie gig-goers. If you have any top tips please leave it in the comment section below. Come back Monday for the first of our Gig of the Week guides.
Coasts are a five-piece alternative band from Bristol. Forming under two years ago Coasts have their first single, an EP and their first UK tour all taking place in the first half of this year. With music sites and bloggers building up good reviews for this fresh band and their first track hitting nearly 100,000 hits on Youtube its easy to see why Coasts are being called one’s to watch this year.
The UK tour kicks off tomorrow in Norwich and finishes in Reading on the 16th march. Check out the offcial music video to their first single “Oceans” (Out now).
Prior to the gig, the band took a moment to answer some of my questions.
For people who maybe haven’t heard of you yet, can you describe what you sound is? And what can people expect from your live performances?
Our sound is a blend of brooding atmospheric pop and slightly more grungy, guitar-based rock. There is also a large tropical presence represented by the use of marimba’s, steel pans and other Caribbean-tinged percussive instruments.
We are all very passionate about the music we make and I’m sure that translates on stage. There’s a lot of rhythmic movement and physical musical expression… Also look out for palm trees and other tropical vibes.
“Oceans” is the first single out this week, how’s the reception for it been so far?
Very positive. We weren’t really sure what to expect but we have been overwhelmed by the level of interest. We’ve had a lot of blog love from America along with a huge amount of global appreciation.
Your tour starts tomorrow here in Norwich, what made you chose Norwich to kick things off?
It’s our drummers hometown and he was very keen to play here.
(Ben) I grew up going to gigs and club nights at the Waterfront and I’ve a number of fond memories of the place.
You been called the ones to watch for 2013 by a lot of music sites and bloggers, how does it feel? And has it added extra pressure to the EP release at the end of April?
It’s always great to find your name amongst a list of promising new acts but to be honest we tend not to pay too much attention to them. With regards to added pressure to the E.P. release, we think it can only be an advantage to have any sort of critical acclaim.
Coasts are playing tomorrow night (Tuesday 26th) at the waterfront Studio, supported by We Can’t Dance, Hello Bear and Behind The Green Screen. Tickets are still available and can be brought here: http://www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk/events/coasts-presented-by-whencoloursmeet---wf-studio--26-02-13-.aspx or at the door on the night.
