When Glaswegian four-piece Franz Ferdinand formed, their mission was to make music for girls to dance to.

Judging by the eruption on the dance floor at the Waterfront when the band took the stage last night, their quirky brand of arty disco-punk has won over the boys too.

The chartbusting band's sell-out headline date in the city was one of the most hotly-anticipated gigs of the year so far.

Support band the Fiery Furnaces played either one very long song or 3000 really short ones.

Whatever the reality, their roller-coaster set left the audience suitably warmed up for the main attraction.

From the moment the conquering heroes took to the stage they had

the audience in the palms of their hands.

Much of the set was a romp through their eponymous and critically acclaimed debut album – accompanied by some pretty fine rock star posing from the front man Alex Kapranos.

The set opened with Cheating on You – a rousing mixture of machine gun drums and driving guitars.

Predictably the biggest cheers of the night were saved for the stomping top-three single Take Me Out and their latest single Matinee – and singer Alex could hardly contain his delight as the audience joined in.

So did the band live up to the hype? Most definitely.
