A Sheringham fishmonger’s shut up shop for the final time on Saturday, after 23 years of serving up local seafood.

Richard’s, in Church Street, was opened in 1991 by fisherman and former lifeboatman Richard Little and his wife Joan, who met in the town as teenagers and were married at St Peter’s Church in 1958.

The shop quickly became popular among local people and holidaymakers for its top quality, freshly-caught fish, crab, lobster and prawns, and the couple went on to build a thriving business.

Since Mr Little died aged 77 two years ago, Mrs Little has run the shop single-handedly but, at the age of 74, she decided the time had come to take life a little easier and put the shop up for sale.

“I am glad it won’t be standing empty, but I am sad it won’t continue as a fish shop,” she said.

Mrs Little says she will miss her customers, some of whom have been coming in for more than two decades.

She plans to spend more time in her Sheringham garden and, while she will no longer be selling fish, she has no intentions of giving up her favourite meal of fresh haddock.

“I love fish, I never get fed up with it,” she said.

  • If the business is thriving, surely it can continue as a fish shop? There are, after all, very few of them, and it would be a shame if a seaside place ended up having only second-rate supermarket fish available.
