About 200 people packed into a Norwich church on Saturday, as part of a series of Norfolk-based community pop-up days.

Organisers of what is called ‘The Common Room’ took over the 15th century St Laurence’s Church in St Benedict’s Street, for a day of making, learning, sharing and socialising.

It followed a similar event last November when people met at the church, under the banner of the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), to discuss ideas and create projects. The same people agreed to meet up again and further develop their ideas.

Tom Ryland, one of the organisers, said: “I got involved from the first day. We want an open community space in Norwich, where people can come for free. If they want to teach something, sing, or take part in a trade school, or anything else, they can.”

Harry Burrage, nine, from Knowsley Road, Norwich, came with his mother because he heard he would be able to play the drums. He also got involved in origami. “I think it’s a good idea,” he said.

Other events on the day included weaving, herbs for resilience, a book exchange, pod building, DIY events, a speaker’s corner, music and food workshops. Further events are planned by the group.
