A couple have swapped the olive groves of southern Spain for the rolling landscapes of south Norfolk where they have relocated to open a new deli.

David and Paula Disney opened Disney’s Deli in Middleton Street, Wymondham on Tuesday.

They moved to Mulbarton a year ago from Andalusia in Spain where they lived for eight and a half years running a hiking hire business.

No strangers to the food trade, Mr and Mrs Disney owned Disney’s Cafe Bar in Beccles for four years before they emigrated.

“Our son, Harry, is now 13 and we had to make a decision whether to come back to the UK or to stay in Spain,” Mr Disney, 54, said.

“We decided to move to Spain because we wanted to give our children a different life.

“We lived in a remote place which was reliant on local produce.”

The couple returned to Norfolk and Mr Disney worked in a series of jobs before he was made redundant from an aircraft livery firm and decided to take the plunge and start his own business.

Mr and Mrs Disney, who also have a daughter, Eleanor, eight, started the deli with the help of Norwich 4 New Enterprise which helped them with funding and creating a business plan.

“We sell 20 different Norfolk cheeses and a large selection of meats.”

They also sell local produce including chocolate from Norwich-based Gnaw and Mrs Temple’s cheese, which is made in Wells-next-the-Sea.

They made the decision to open the deli after Mrs Disney was in Wymondham with her mother and they stopped someone and asked where the nearest one was.

“We found out that there wasn’t one,” Mrs Disney, 46, said. “So we thought we would have a go.”

They plan to sell seasonal produce and to create Christmas hampers and dispatcho in the summer.

The former shoe shop is decked out with wooden shelves and fruit and vegetables are sold in baskets, boxes and crates.

“There’s not a metal shelf in sight,” Mrs Disney said. “We wanted to create a rustic-looking place.”
