Roger Human, who started a shop on his smallholding in 1991, said: “We had an awful lot of extremely complimentary comments about what we were doing. It’s absolutely wonderful – you can’t buy that kind of accolade.”

Mr Human was joined in his celebrations by The Fruit Pig Company which was judged the “butchers choice” by 2011’s Battle of the Bangers winner Archers.

Matt Cockin said: “This was our third attempt and we’ve actually won something.

“It’s really nice that the rare breeds won today.”

Bradwell Butchery, near Great Yarmouth, came in second place for both votes.

Organiser Sarah de Chair, board member of the EDP Adnams Norfolk Food and Drink Festival, in association with Norfolk County Council, said she was delighted with the turnout.

“Some people take it very seriously,” she said. “I’ve seen people writing down their comments on the back of the voting slip as they go round.

“There’s a great camaraderie but also a competitiveness between the butchers.”

Saturday also saw the first of the weekend’s producers’ markets take place with more than 30 stallholders inside and outside the Forum selling their wares.

Sue Barrett, from Not Just Chocolate based at Shropham, was taking part in the Festival in the City celebrations for the first time having only started her business in February.

She said it was an “exciting” time to be part of the Norfolk food industry. “I think Norfolk is known for its food now,” she said. “Having ‘made in Norfolk’ on a product gives it a certain status.”
