Wroxham to learn Ryman League Cup fate

17:24 17 January 2013

Wroxham will find out tonight whether or not they have been kicked out of the Ryman League Cup competition after being caught up in the travel chaos caused by Tuesday’s snowfall.

With Norfolk at a standstill and some motorists stuck in queues for hours, the Yachtsmen were unable to make the 100-mile journey to Canvey Island to play Concord Rangers in the quarter-finals.

But manager David Batch’s plight has met with little sympathy from his counterpart at promotion-chasing Concord and both sides’ arguments will be heard at a board meeting of the Ryman League tonight.

The league have threatened to expel Wroxham from the competition for failing to fulfil the fixture, but Wroxham will point out that while the players were ready to assemble at a meeting point, the team bus was unable to leave Norwich because of the conditions – and that the police had warned against unnecessary travel.

Ryman League chairman Alan Turvey said: “The referee decided the playing surface was in order, so Concord had made the necessary arrangements.

“Wroxham expressed concerns regarding travel, and advised us they would not be playing the game.

“We have emails from both clubs and will seek further explanations and discuss it at the board meeting.”
