Wisbech Town will look to bounce back from their Long Buckby mauling at struggling Northampton Sileby Rangers this afternoon.

Joint boss Paul Cousins admits his players let themselves and the travelling fans down in their 5-1 loss at Buckby on Saturday. And now he is demanding a response against the team that are second bottom of the United Counties League Premier Division.

Cousins said: “I know they are down near the bottom of the league but this will be another tough game. They have a good playing surface, which should help us, but we need to improve by 100pc because Saturday was not good enough.”

Callum Stocks grabbed the Fenmen’s only goal on a demoralising afternoon. The defeat capped a frustrating Christmas period for Wisbech after their home clash with Holbeach United on Boxing Day was called off just an hour before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.

“The pitch (against Buckby) was terrible, even worse than ours on Boxing Day, but they played better than us in awful conditions,” added Cousins.

“The lads lost too many individual battles. They need to look at themselves because they let themselves down. We were on a really good run and doing ever so well so it is a massive setback.”

Town are still on the lookout for a defender to replace talismanic centre-back Jon Fairweather who joined Spalding United before Christmas.
