A Norfolk teenager has made a dream football debut in the USA - scoring a wonder goal that has been shown coast to coast on America's ESPN sports channel.

Aaron Jones, 19, the younger son of Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach boss Albert Jones, was playing his first match for Georgia State University, in Atlanta, and his screaming, long-range volley was an equaliser on the way to a 2-1 victory over Clemson University.

His delighted father said: 'We have had so many phone calls from friends and family since it went on Youtube. It has already had thousands of hits.'

Aaron left his home in Caister, near Yarmouth, for a four-year sports scholarship in the US in January after being released by Ipswich Town. He had spent 10 years at the Suffolk club, the last two as an apprentice when he made reserve team appearances.

The central midfielder, whose late grandfather Jimmy was a former chairman of Norwich City, said: 'I saw a corner come in and the Clemson defender head it away. I literally did not have any time to think about it and I just hit it. Ninety-nine times out of 100, the ball sails into the stands but that one time it went into the top corner.

'I really did not what was going through my head. I just kind of ran over to the bench and saw all the boys going crazy.

'Our head coach cut the film of the game that evening and emailed it to all of us. Of course, all the boys put it straight on Facebook and Twitter. The response from back home was amazing.'

Aaron, a former student at Lynn Grove High School, in Yarmouth, is studying business studies but hopes to continue his football career after university either in the MLS or English league.

He said he had seen Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney score similar goals 'but for me to watch myself do it was strange'.

His father said: 'Football does run in our family. I played for Gorleston and my dad's brother John was with Arsenal.'
