Long-serving Thetford Town manager Mark Scott has been shown the door after a poor start to the season.

The Brecklanders are bottom of the Premier Division of the Thurlow Nunn League after losing their opening three games, two of them heavily, with an FA Cup win at Swaffham Town the only bright spot.

Scot's dismissal comes just days before an attractive looking cup tie with neighbours Bury Town, which is being staged at Mundford Road on Sunday.

Revealing the news on his Twitter feed, Scott said last night: 'Today @Thetford Town FC have relieved me of my duty as first team manager. Was looking forward to the FA Cup vs @BuryTownFC. Many thanks to all the players that I have worked with throughout my years with Thetford.'

Scott was one of the longest serving managers in the Eastern Counties, having taken over as Town boss for the 2009-10 season after learning his trade at Needham Market. During his long spell in charge Thetford enjoyed success in the Norfolk Senior Cup, twice reaching finals at Carrow Road, but Scott's greatest achievement was to guide the club to promotion from Division One in 2011-12.

Town finished a respectable 14th last season but have struggled so far this term, losing 1-0 to Whitton, 8-0 to Godmanchester and 7-3 at Brantham, all away from home.

A statement on the club's website has been posted this morning, saying: 'Thetford Town FC would like to thank Mark Scott for all he has done for both the first team and the club in the last few years.

'Mark has contributed massively to the team's success and that is without question, however, as of today, Mark is no longer the first-team manager, we hope you will continue to support the club during this transitional period.'
