In Premier A of the Grant Matthewson Norwich and District League, CEYMS B gained two important 6-4 wins over Bristelectric and Foxwood A in their battle against relegation.
This has moved them within four points of CEYMS C, but they have two games in hand. Russell King provided the catalyst in both matches winning all his singles and the doubles. Although already doomed to relegation, UEA B gained a hard-fought draw with Gothic B, Mikael Papantonia, in a rare appearance for the students, winning all his singles.
In the mid-table clash Wensum D took maximum points over an under-strength Gothic A. Star performer was Frank Hayward for Wensum who rolled back the years winning his singles.
CEYMS D took two more giant steps to the Premier B title after gaining maximum points against Foxwood D and third placed Wensum E.
In Division One, Bryan Scurfield was in good form for CEYMS E, with a fine maximum as they fought back from 3-5 down to draw with Hospital Drifters. Newton Flotman beat Missionaries 6-4 with some excellent matches all through the evening.
After a mammoth tussle in a five-setter doubles match, Kieran Brady got an amazing shot to finally take the win and achieve a maximum.
In Division Two leaders Gothic D faltered again being beaten 6-4 by a good team effort from Fourbees A, who had Doug Ratcliffe leading the way with a maximum. Second-placed UEA C must be looking at the top spot having four games in hand with only nine points separating them and Gothic D.
In Division Three, Thorpe St Andrew beat Tankards 6-4 in a very hard-fought match with five games going the distance. A weakened TSA side, without their usual No 1, did well to scrape a win. They also beat Foxwood I 7-3, the Thompson Family saved the point for Foxwood, with two wins for Sam and one for mum Stephanie.
In Division Four, another quality match, with a strangely Christmas feel about it as it was probably the last full Brocklesbys vs Shelly Telly match, ended in a 7-3 win for the Wensum Brocklesby team. Maximums for Rosanna of the Wensum Brocklesbys and Colin Jenkinson for Shelly Telly plus a win a piece for the remaining Brocklesbys and Michelle Savage from Shelly Telly. The difference in the end was the doubles which both went to the Brocklesby team, Finn and Kate winning in four against Jenkinson and Di Cunningham and Richard and Rosanna winning a tight five setter against Ruth Bullard and Savage. Only one five set match but great fun!
