GB star Steve Worrall says making his Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup debut at King's Lynn tonight is 'a big step in the right direction'.

Belle Vue star Worrall – who rode for the King's Lynn Young Stars in 2013 – was runner-up in the British Championship final at his home track in Manchester and he believes that played a huge role in him getting the nod from GB team manager Alun Rossiter.

'It's a fantastic opportunity and I am extremely grateful for it,' he said. 'Obviously my result in the British final had a big impact on Rosco's decision. I just have to take full advantage of it.

'I've always been going up and up and up. I want to keep doing that and this is a big step in the right direction.'

Worrall scored four paid five points for Belle Vue as they won 47-43 at Poole on Monday, but admits he had one eye on making sure he was at top speed for the King's Lynn contest – the biggest night of his career to date.

'I was a bit disappointed with Monday,' he told www.speedwaygp.com. 'I'd sent all my best engines away to be serviced because I want to have all good gear ready for Saturday.

'It's massive. I had to take the risk of sending my gear away, but come Saturday, it will all be right.'

Steve's twin Richie was named in the provisional 10-man squad, but didn't make the final five.

He said: 'I don't think there will be any jealousy. It's just one of those things and there's nothing we can do about it. It's out of our hands and if it was the other way around, I would be really proud of him and wish him all the best of luck. It's not often you get a chance like this, so I want to grasp it with both hands.'

Worrall fully expects the Lions to see off an Aussie side featuring 2012 world champion Chris Holder, World Championship leader Jason Doyle, King's Lynn racer Troy Batchelor, the in-form Nick Morris and World Under-21 champion Max Fricke at reserve.

He said: 'I would be disappointed if we didn't come away with a win, to be honest. I know what I can do. Give me my good equipment, the right track conditions and the right night, and I know I can go out there and beat any of them. So can the other three riders. When it comes to that night, we can come away with the win and go straight through to the final.'
