Sheringham’s William Harrold has made it through to the second stage of European Tour qualifying.
The 23-year-old, former Gresham’s School pupil, will now travel to Spain at the beginning of next month where he must fight it out, at one of four venues, for a place at final qualifying.
Harrold shot rounds of 76, 69, 75 and 73 at Wychwood Park Golf Club, Crewe, to finish on five over par and in a tie for 20th position to book his place in the next round.
Harrold has had a difficult season on the Europro Tour, making the cut just four times in 13 starts, but is determined to finish on a high, having worked overtime with his London-based coach Scott Cranfield.
The graduate of Missouri University, in America, is currently out in the Middle East honing his competitive edge on the MENA Tour ahead of the tests that lie ahead.
And all the practice looks to be paying off with Harrold having achieved an eighth place finish in the American Express Dirab Golf Championship, the third event of six on the Tour.
It also provided a welcome boost to the Harrold coffers as he trousered $5,190 into the bargain.
“He’s trying to get his rhythm back.” said dad Winston. “He’s been working flat out all summer. He started to do better about a month ago and his game is starting to come together. He had to back to the drawing board and when the game leaves you that’s when you learn about golf. He’s been working hard on the psychological side of things and playing one shot at a time.”
