King’s Lynn Town last night completed the signing of Banbury United defender Jason Lee.

The 29-year-old put pen to paper at The Walks before joining his new team-mates for a midweek training session.

Linnets boss Gary Setchell says his left-footed arrival, who can play at centre-back or left back, will add much needed competition to a squad that is currently missing defenders Ross Watson, suspended for the next three games, and long-term injury victim Stuart Wall.

Setchell said: “I enquired about him pre-season but he had done his deal with Banbury.

“But this is the time where players get restless and managers are losing their job, like the man (Ady Fuller) at Banbury, so we’ve been able to cash in on Jason.

“He’s 29, he’s got that steely bit of experience, he’s got a great left foot, he’s not slow across the ground and he’ll give us an extra body for competition for places.

“We’ve not brought him in to take anyone’s place. Ryan (Fryatt) and Phil (Gulliver) have done magnificently for us so far. But I doubt they’ll be able to go 42 games without picking up a knock or a suspension.

“So it’s a common sense decision to bring someone else in who is as good or better than what we’ve got.”

Daventry-based Lee joined Banbury – who play at Step Three of the non-league ladder, one above Lynn – in the summer.

He won the United Counties Premier Division in 2010 with Daventry Town, who Lynn play in the FA Cup on Saturday, and has also enjoyed stints at Kettering Town, Cogenhoe United and Long Buckby. The former Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Rushden & Diamonds youth team player is eligible to make his debut during the weekend’s first qualifying round tie.

Setchell said: “He’s going back to his old club where he won the league two years ago. It’s a little twist that the FA Cup seems to throw up.

“He’ll go straight into the squad. I’ll have to make a decision as to what I’m doing at right-back as to whether he plays at centre-half or not.”
