The Magpies’ six-game unbeaten Ryman Division One North run was ended during Tuesday’s 1-0 home loss to Needham Market. It was a match Matt Henman’s side dominated and now he hopes they can be more ruthless this afternoon to boost their play-off hopes after a cracking first-half of the term following promotion to Step Four.

Dereham’s manager said: “The bottom line is you can have as much possession as you like in games and you can create as many chances as you want but if you can’t take your chances when they come you’re not going to win games and we have seen that against Needham.

“I can’t fault the players for their commitment and effort, they did 98pc of things right and at times completely dominated the game. We pushed them back and defended well when they were on top and to lose in the way we did is very disappointing.

“Recently we have been drawing games instead of winning and on Tuesday we have lost a game which for the majority we completely dominated. The last month has been frustrating as we all feel we could have done better, but we have been playing well and we believe that the wins will come.”

Seven minutes from time Dereham were made to pay the price for being wasteful in front of goal, when Russell Malton finished off an excellent Needham move, sealing a hard-fought win for Steve Foley’s side.

The defeat saw Dereham – who won 1-0 at home to Waltham Abbey on Saturday thanks to Dan Morphew’s goal – drop to seventh in the table. Their opponents today sit 14th.

The Magpies will be looking to bounce back and King’s Lynn Town defender Chris Ward should be in line to return after a paperwork error at his parent club prevented his one-month loan spell starting in midweek.
