Ryan Walsh’s ambitions remained firmly on track last night as he made the first successful defence of his British featherweight belt.

The Cromer fighter ended the hopes of Aberdeen’s Darren ‘Trainwreck’ Traynor, who had been unbeaten in 11 outings, in the fifth round with a classic right hand.

Walsh insists nothing will derail his ambitions to move on to the world scene – and in front of a noisy Farmy Army presence at the iconic York Hall he produced the sort of performance that will send out a warning to would-be opponents – at doemstic and world level.

Walsh came out looking to throw a few bombs as he laid down the law to the challenger, landing a couple of good rights to the body and a left to the head as he switched with ease from southpaw to orthodox.

Walsh was caught with a big right early on in the second, but kept his balance and regrouped, before landing a great right-handed response. Walsh worked downstairs to the body, but Traynor’s reach was giving him some success, with long rights.

Traynor sustained a cut over his right eye in the third and the Scot’s mood wouldn’t have been helped by Walsh’s late flurry of punches.

From then on it was all about Walsh, who was producing the classier, eye-catching work, especially in an excellent fourth round as he eased ahead.

It was cracking stuff for the audience, with Walsh showing his class – and with a minute of the fifth left the inevitable happened as superb right hand put Traynor on the canvas, the Scot unable to beat the count. It was quality stuff from Walsh who showed all the qualities that will surely earn him a shot at his dream.
