The 125th anniversary of Royal Norwich Golf Club was marked by a week-long series of events.
It all teed off with a Heritage Day, a nine-hole shotgun competition played with hickory shafts, and continued with various competitions and a gala dinner at the Norwich North Holiday Inn.
The club are currently preparing for a move to a new course on the site of the old Weston Park course, with their historic base at Hellesdon, while still open for play, now the site of a housing development.
“The countdown is now on for our next historic moment – the relocation to our new course at Weston,” said general manager Phil Grice.
“The new course is looking fantastic with work now complete, including the seeding, so it’s now time to let the course grow in over the coming months before the first of our members tee-off in late summer 2019.
“It really is an exciting time for Royal Norwich and with over 300 new members in little over a year and with the new course stimulating more and more interest we look forward to welcoming many more new members in the coming months.
“Our 125th anniversary celebrations have been an unprecedented success and I’d like to thank everyone involved.
“I’d particularly like to thank our special guests from as far afield as Canada, Australia, Tasmania and Malta, to name but a few, for being part of our historic week. Their warmth and support has lit up the club and we have been honoured to share our special week with them.
“None of the celebrations though could have happened without the hard work, dedication and support of our members and staff. They have gone above and beyond to deliver and take part in a host of golfing events and social engagements throughout the week.”
The Norfolk CGU’s Bass Final for junior golfers took place at King’s Lynn, Bawburgh and Sheringham going head to head. In a match played in the right spirit, with both sides having good support, the Bawburgh of Zak Campbell, Emma Bambridge, Jamie Fox and Doris Thomas came out winners by 2½-1½.
