Record turnout for RAF Marham Flyers’ New Year’s Eve 10k event

The RAF Marham Flyers Running Club held its annual New Year’s Eve 10K and saw a record turnout of 217 runners.

Although there was a lot of surface water on the airfield following the previous day’s record rainfall, the damp, windy conditions did nothing to put off people from entering.

The run was led off by the Station Commander, Gp Capt Cab Townsend (run number 1) who led the pack at the start but was quickly over-taken by some of the elite runners from the local clubs, with Ryston Runners fielding a record number of participants, followed by Three Counties and the Bushfield Joggers who had travelled over from Peterborough to take part.

West Norfolk AC were also well represented with their Debbie Schwarz being the first lady home in a time of 43:38. Ryston Runner, Nick Bensley, a regular at these events, had his first time win in a time of 36:23, a great result in far from ideal conditions.

A special mention must also go to veteran Ryston Runner, Viv Williamson, who celebrated her 70th birthday while running the course, achieving another excellent time of 62:30.

The run was held in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund and raised over £3,300 for this very worthy cause which provides so much welfare support to both the serving and retired RAF community.
