Wisbech Town are so concerned about their lack of football ahead of the FA Vase quarter-finals that they are desperately trying to arrange a fixture for next week.

The Fenmen have had two matches postponed since they beat Hadleigh United 2-1 in the fifth round on February 15. Saturday’s clash with Wellingborough Town was rescheduled because their opponents had to play a rearranged Knockout Cup tie and Tuesday’s home game with Deeping Rangers fell victim to a waterlogged pitch.

It leaves Town scheduled to play just once before their massive last-eight tie against Sholing, leaving joint-boss Dick Creasey feeling anxious that his troops could be match-rusty.

He said: “It is an absolute nightmare. We are training but it is not the same as playing matches so we can’t get into any rhythm.

“Paul (Cousins, joint boss) and I thought we would have three games to work with ahead of the FA Vase game. We told the players we would rotate the team and everyone would get two 90 minutes to earn the shirt.

“With this being the case, we have asked the club to ask the league (United Counties League Premier Division) about giving us a fixture in midweek ahead of the FA Vase game.”

The Fenmen, as it stands, are set to play just struggling Northampton Sileby Rangers at home on Saturday before they travel to Southampton looking to keep their dreams of reaching a Wembley final alive.
