Even a bizarre exclusion for Robert Lambert couldn’t stop the King’s Lynn Stars from beating Lakeside to go top of the Elite League table.

The talented teenager was involved in a controversial moment when referee Jim Lawrence decided he had only completed his ride in heat seven because of “outside assistance”. But boss Rob Lyon was furious as he insisted the schoolboy sensation hadn’t left the track before being told to turn round and complete his four laps.

In the end it didn’t matter as Lynn overturned a daunting mid-meeting 11-point deficit to win 47-45, but the Stars’ manager exchanged a difference of opinion with the man above the tapes – which was caught by the Sky Sports cameras.

Lyon, speaking after the incident, said: “As far as I could see, his front wheel didn’t come off the track. The referee’s telling me that there was outside influence that forced him to go round and get the point. But he wasn’t over the white line, he didn’t leave the track – yes he didn’t realise obviously and was told to go round for a point - but he went round and got a point, it was legitimate.”

Lawrence hardly endeared himself to Stars supporters when he was overheard telling Lynn’s boss that he would have loved to have given Lambert the point “to keep the scores interesting”.

However, Niels-Kristian Iversen’s match-winning haul of 21 eventually made the moment pretty irrelevant as the Stars won a thrilling last-heat decider.- - To read a match report from last night’s meeting click here.
