Richard Bloomfield’s joy at being awarded a wildcard into the qualifying draw for the Wimbledon Championships was shortlived after he fell at the first hurdle at the Bank of England Sports Ground in Roehampton.
Bloomfield lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to Japan’s Hiroki Moriya, who is ranked 140 places higher than the Norfolk man at 214 in the world.
Bloomfield went into the event on the back of some decent form, however, after qualifying for the Nottingham Challenger and reaching the last 16 of the main draw.
The 29-year-old from Alpington defeated Joshua Ward-Hibbert, Pierre-Ludovic-Duclos and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the qualifying draw to reach the first round proper against fellow qualifier Alexander Bury from Belarus.
A competent performance saw the Norfolk number one safely through in straight sets, before his pleasing run was stopped by the hugely experienced Dudi Sela.
The top seed, who has been ranked as high as 29 in the world, made life tough for Bloomfield and a 6-2, 6-4 score line was a fair reflection on the match.
Over the weekend, Bloomfield attempted the qualifying draw for the ATP 250 AEGON International event at Eastbourne but ran into former world number 26 Victor Hanescu in the opening round.
After losing the opening set 6-4, Bloomfield found an early break of serve and at one point led 4-1, 15-14 in the second. The Romanian showed his class however to break back as Bloomfield served for the set at 5-3, before reeling off the next three games to close out the match 6-4, 7-5.
