Saturday saw the last race of the season for Yare Sailing Club with their annual Turkey Race.
The event had a new venue this year, being run upriver from Surlingham Ferry to Bramerton Woods End and back. Eight yachts took part, despite the early snow flurries and freezing temperature, setting off upriver in light north westerly airs for a race that began with some pleasant reaching, but then provided a challenging tack against the ebb to pass the Woods End pub.
The slower boats were set off first, with Arthur Wells on his newly- acquired Insh’allah getting a good start before enjoying a tussle round the whole course with Pandora III, sailed by the Smith family.
The fastest yacht in the fleet, Philip Scott’s Rebecca, made a flying start and was soon up at the head of the field, before falling into a windless hole just below the mark. Here the slower boats caught her up again, negating her advantage.
Rebecca, who often wins this event, could only manage third place, being beaten into it by four seconds from Insh’allah. The turkey prize went to Pandora III.
