Series D began in strong winds with a high ebbing tide delighting most sailors at Beccles Amateur Sailing Club last Saturday with just a few opting for the safety of the bank.
Fifteen helms were put to the test on a very choppy Winter Tankard race one start, which saw Charlie Folkard in Streaker ‘Go Bananas’ ahead until confusion at the first mark sent him quickly to the back. Mark Langston in his newly acquired Streaker, White Riot, went comfortably ahead to take the first win. Folkard worked through the fleet to recover well for second ahead of Rory Kelsey and Daryl Morgan in Norfolk Tankard third.
With a large motor cruiser across the start line as race two began, Folkard and Gorbourd were found over, and a race soon developed between Mike Thrower in Laser J and Langston. Langston took his second win on corrected time over a good effort by team Blankley, first over the finish, in the video camera loaded RS200 Blue RS Fly.
A resourceful Poppy Roll in Topper Twilight soon settled down after an early capsize to pass Rowan Curtis in Animal and remain ahead to take the bell in the Tann Trophy. A good start in race two and another five-star performance gave Roll her second win ahead of Curtis with Ashley Warnes third.
James How and Harry Browne stepped up to the challenging conditions in their Optimists, with How taking both wins.
