Buckenham Sailing Club held their 21st annual Buckenham to Breydon and Back passage race for dinghies and non traditional cruisers on the River Yare on Saturday.
The Triple B was sailed in light winds and less than favourable tides, but brilliant sunshine. The early starters struggled until the wind picked up in late morning.
The majority of entrants took advantage of the latest possible starts, leaving at 11.50 and noon. Due to conditions, the decision was made to time the boats in and out at Reedham and return directly to Buckenham rather than to proceed to a turn buoy on Breydon water.
Norfolk Punts and Javelins reached the Langley Woods before the other fleets, where they all struggled against the tide and very fluky winds. Norfolk Punts, Comet, helmed by Richard Whitefoot and with crew Mat Ellis and Swallow II, sailed by Will Daniels and Alistair Drew, managed to get clear of the trees with Javelin Big Zipper, helmed by Chris Skedge and with Chris Clitheroe as crew.
These three stayed well ahead of the following fleet and were timed out at Reedham in that order and started their return leg almost immediately. This trio of dinghies kept their places on the return, in both elapsed and corrected time.
Comet crossed the finish line at 15.07 to take the overall BBB prize together with the Gilmour Trophy for the fastest passage and first Norfolk Punt trophy. Swallow II crossed the line 20 minutes later to take overall second place with Big Zipper finishing third to take the Nulsec Trophy for first Javelin and first Buckenham club boat.
Charisdis, sailed by Adrian Gregory and Ray Perry, was the first Wayfarer home, fourth overall and recipient of the Boats ‘n Bits Wayfarer Shield. Andy and Anne Hobson brought their Leader Akiri home to take fifth place on corrected time and the Leader Trophy.
More than half the entrants finished the race before the cut off at 5pm, but Leaders Dual control and Forget Me Knot were just outside the time limit and no day boats were able to get back in time.
There were two contenders for the Catastrophe Trophy. The sailor who arrived with the wrong rudder for his Norfolk Punt and Cruiser Limon, a Nicholson 27 whose mainsail ripped. The prize was awarded to Alex Bostuck, Andy Walter, Simon McIntyre and Marty Brown crew of Limon.
Proceeds from the race will go to Waveney Stardust.
