Wymondham suffered a narrow home defeat after a superb spectacle for the many spectators who had turned up to see the game.
Further illnesses, injuries and unavailabilities saw a much changed home side take to the pitch under captain Dane Canning.
Cantabs’ pack is a big, solid and experienced unit and Wymondham knew they would have problems at the scrum and line-out. But their play in the loose, defence and through the attacks led by the backs was often a joy to watch.
Cantabs immediately exerted pressure with their pack and after five minutes scored an unconverted try
Wymondham reacted by using quick loose ball to set their backs running and one such move saw Alex Wigney dart over for an unconverted try to bring the scores level at 5-5.
With a man advantage Wymondham then went ahead when Billu Graham-Park scorched through to score a try, converted by Jonny Payne, who then slotted over a penalty to make it 15-5.
Cantabs’ forwards were still winning ball at setpieces and eventually managed a good move of their own to score an unconverted try to make it 15-10 at the break.
Cantabs started the second half determined to exert pressure again through their forwards and scored a pushover try to level the scores.
Nicky Ferns returned to the fray after a long absence before a first mistake in defence by Wymondham saw the visitors break through to score a try under the posts which was converted and put them in front at 15-22.
Harry Anderson-Brown replaced Auden Airdrie, who had worked his socks off all afternoon, and his fresh legs were used to keep up the attacking momentum. Eventually a flowing move through the hands from a quick pass from Payne saw the ball pass to Ashley Harrop to score in the corner to bring it back to 20-22. The conversion was just short and although the home side tried to assert more pressure in the last two minutes the visitors held on.
To show the fine margins in this division Cantabs moved to third with this win while Wymondham stayed near the bottom and yet in two matches between the two sides this season Cantabs have only scored five more more points.
