Holt travelled to second-placed Saffron Walden to complete the first half of this season’s league campaign.
Walden took the initiative and following an offside from the Holt back row, the home side used the wind to drill the ball into Holt’s red zone and a resulting lineout produced an unconverted pushover try.
Walden again took the game to Holt and again the back row gave away further penalties which resulted in two further converted kicks.
Against the run of play, from a defensive scrum, van Poortvliet made a run, passing the ball to Riley who scored a converted try under the posts, making the score 11-7.
Normal service was resumed as Walden again made good use of the conditions, driving into Holt’s half.
Again following further repeated infringements from the back row, Holt were reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes. Walden kicked the penalty into touch and scored a second, unconverted, pushover try from the resulting lineout, ending the first half 16-7.
With the wind to their back Holt started the second half stronger, driving the ball into the opposition half. As Walden sought to slow the ball down Holt were awarded a penalty which was put into touch.
Holt scored an unconverted pushover try of their own from the lineout as Jarry-Ryan touched down having joined his team-mates in the maul to push the ball over.
Almost immediately from the restart Walden regained the ball, drove up field and sucked the defence in. Spinning the ball out wide, with slick hands and great running angles, Walden scored a converted try from the best move of the match, taking the score to 23-12.
As Holt started to chase the game, their overeagerness again gave the advantage to Walden who made good use of it by driving Holt backwards.
In the last move of the game, again from a penalty, Walden took a quick tap to score a converted bonus-point try ending the game as deserved 30-12 winners. Holt’s Woodforde’s man of the match was Gray for his dynamic performance in both the loose and tight areas of the game.
