Margarson pulls off a surprise on Great Yarmouth’s season opener

Trainer George Margarson could be forgiven for being pre-occupied with filly Lucky Kristale, one of the favourites for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday week.

But the handler pulled off a shock 25/1 upset in the feature race when Great Yarmouth opened its 2014 season yesterday.

Shyron, winner of two Wolverhampton all-weather races last October, scored by a neck under Jordan Vaughan to land the £8,000 prize.

Teenage rider Vaughan actually lost his reins inside the final furlong but he re-gathered them to hold off Bretherton.

Favourite backers had been given a great start by Abseil in the opener. The 5/4 shot under James Doyle for trainer Sir Michael Stoute was delivered perfectly to bolt clear and win easily from Joys of Spring.

There was more punters’ delight when Piazon, named after the Brazilian footballer, romped away with the five-furlong sprint at 8/11 for claimer Louis Steward and trainer Michael Bell.

Highly regarded apprentice Oisin Murphy recorded his first win at the course when getting Der Meister home in the 10-furlong maiden for the same owners as Piazon and trainer Andrew Balding. Der Meister was returned at 9/2.

Although Kasbhom wandered across the track, William Carson was still able to get the 11/2 chance home in the handicap. The winner trained by Anthony Carson, beat outsider Speciality.

Rosie Jessop gave trainer Peter Charalambous’ Ela Goog La Mou a great ride in the 10-furlong handicap at 20/1. Jessop got away around the far bend and the field couldn’t reel her in.

The last race, in which favourite Dancing Freddy was pulled up injured, went to 5/1 chance Megaleka under Tim Clark for Alan Bailey.
