Magpies 3rds remain top of the Norfolk League Premier Division after a 2-1 win over Diss.
But Dereham 2nds, who have a game in hand, are the only unbeaten team following their 1-0 win at Norwich City 2nds.
The decisive goal came towards the end of the first half when Hannah Barnard scored from close range.
City battled hard to draw level in the second half but the closest they came was a shot which hit the bar.
UEA are second after a 5-1 win at Thetford, whose defeat would have been heavier but for some fine saves by Abby Rolph. Thetford’s reply came in the last minute when Hammond set up a chance for Wheeler.
Pelicans remain bottom after losing 2-1 at Evergreens, who produced their best hockey of the season so far.
Evergreens broke the deadlock mid way through the first half through Katie Sammacicci.
But keeper Su Hoogendyk needed to pull off some top class saves in the second half to keep them level until Kathryn Gordon made it 2-0 with a stunning solo run. Pelicans scored a consolation goal five minutes from time.
Michele Saunders, Jodie Wakefield and Lisa Ellwood all shone on their Evergreens debuts.
Lowestoft Railway won 4-0 at Norwich City 3rds with two goals in each half.
In Division One Norwich Dragons 3rds maintained their perfect record with a 6-0 win at North Walsham.
Emma Moolman finished a superb move to put them in front but had to wait until the last minute of the half for their second – Hazel Medler converting a penalty corner.
Dragons stepped up a gear in the second half and the goals flowed from Klara Moolman, Amy Brown, Moolman and Amelia Dawson.
Harleston Magpies 5ths showed how much confidence they’d gained from their opening win of the season last week when they beat UEA 2nds 3-0.
Sophie Long put them ahead midway through the first half and the other goals followed from Jose Tibbenham and Long again.
A rejuvenated Broadland 2nds won 2-1 at Sprowston 2nds. Broadland took an early lead when Jenny Whiting’s defensive clearance was quickly transferred on by Carolyn Duthie to Nikki Kent, the Broadland captain, who with great skill, slotted the ball in with the reverse side of her stick. Sprowston upped their game and equalised and with Broadland now stretched looked likely winners.
Broadland, however, had other ideas and with great determination and commitment held firm to take the game when Becky Savory slipped the ball to Nikki Kent at a penalty corner. Her powerful shot was deflected up and over the keeper by a defender’s stick to secure the points.
Evergreens 2nds beat Reepham Ladies 2-1 but were lucky when the visitors hit the woodwork three times – twice from the same attack.
Evergreens went ahead from their only attack of the first half but Reepham equalised through Becky Briggs – only to be beaten by a sucker punch in the dying minutes.
In Division Two Norwich Dragons 4ths went behind inside 30 seconds against Sprowston 3rds, but went on to win 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Debbie Santa Clara after Annika Richardson had equalised.
Norwich Dragons 5ths beat Hales Hornets 1-0 with a a close-range shot on the turn from Lisa Harwood.
