Norwich City’s men progressed to the third round of the England Hockey Over-40s Cup with a 4-1 win at home to Witham on Sunday.
City took an early lead when Matthew Brine smashed home a short corner.
The hosts then proceeded to play the ball around fluently, allowing Witham little time or space.
Jon Painter added a second for City midway through the first half, followed by a penalty stroke from Geoff Spencer.
In the second period Witham came more into the game, with Simon Bullen pulling off some good saves, but it was City who extended their lead when Maurice Meyer’s long pass found Jon Kidner to tap in.
With five minutes remaining, Ali Wardale failed to control a pass, allowing the Witham forward a free run at goal, and he scored with a reverse stick strike.
Norwich will now be at home to City of Peterborough in the next round, on Sunday, January 13. City of Peterborough were 6-0 winners at Sudbury on Sunday.
Norwich City’s women bowed out of the England Hockey Women’s Trophy at the second round stage with a 2-1 defeat at Colchester on Sunday.
City made a strong start, and had two early short corners, but could not convert either of them. Anna Horsley then forced the ball home after a goalmouth scramble, but the effort was ruled out for a foul.
Colchester then broke and scored in similar circumstances, but their effort was allowed to stand.
Emily Anthony netted her 30th goal of the season to bring Norwich level, but they soon fell behind again following a short corner.
In the second half, City struggled to make their possession count and as tiredness set in, they were unable to find an equaliser.
There was better news for the club’s Under-14 boys, who are top of their Midlands League Three division in the National Championship.
City drew 2-2 against Cambridge, with goals from Sam Tomlinson and George Brine, before beating Saffron Walden 6-2, with Miles Doncaster, Sam Paterson, Ross Pitcher, Rob Baker, Josh Bailey and Samuel Holland on target.
The final round of matches is on February 10.
