Magpies Ladies moved clear at the top of the Investec Women’s League Eastern Conference after winning 2-0 away to previous leaders Sevenoaks.

The trip to Kent always shaped to be one of the most challenging games of the season. And Magpies had to withstand a lot of pressure in the first half, which they survived intact largely thanks to some great saves from Megan Adams.

But they were unlucky not to score themselves just before half time and came out much stronger after their interval team talk, stunning Sevenoaks with two quick goals – both finished off by Hannah Palmer.

Adams, with the help of Louisa Greenacre, made more good saves in what became a thrilling end to end game.

But after good work by Sarah Brook – and a dramatic fall – they almost earned a third goal from a short corner shot by Emma Lee-Smith shortly before the final whistle.

But the three points have deservedly taken Magpies to the half way point of the season still unbeaten and two points ahead of their nearest challengers at the top of the table as they bid to return to the National divisions.

• Harleston Magpies Under-18s progressed to the third round of the EHB Cup with a convincing 5-0 win over local rivals Norwich City.

An early goal from Rachael Herod settled the nerves and, although Jess Harvey made two key saves, Magpies managed to double their lead just before the interval with a close range finish from Jemima Jacobs.

The second half was one way traffic and Magpies’ relentless pressure was finally rewarded when Emily Brown, Jemima and Rachael all hit the back board in a crazy three minute spell.

Magpies’ short corner count of 15 with none against emphasised the total dominance by a team superbly led by captain and player of the match Lizzie Jones.
