Tim Guy (Iceni Velo) dealt coolly with a first-lap puncture before wrapping up the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League on a snow-bound course at Bury St Edmunds.
The only man who could beat Guy – who is manager of Streetlife Cycles in Norwich – was Canadian Hayden Wood, who blew his chance when, struggling to engage iced-up shoe clips with his pedal, he kicked off his chain.
Anna Buick (Moda Bike Magic) from Wymondham completed her set of counting rides to take the Women’s League with eight straight wins. Anna, who has been concentrating on national-level racing this winter, was followed home by her sister Imogen just one second behind. Next rider in the female field of 17, was more than three minutes adrift.
Dad Phil Buick, already assured of the Veteran’s League, took the West Suffolk Wheelers-promoted race in fine style, helping his Norwich club Iceni Velo win the Ivan Jeckell Trophy as the top league club.
Conditions were truly splendid for cyclo-cross with the varied course clothed in snow.
Perhaps it was the clear and visible danger, but there were actually far fewer falls than when the course was first used on a spring-like day last February. On that occasion the reverse-camber curves caught many unawares. This time the organisers took riders onto the flat before putting in a corner, but getting round them was still a tricky business.
Senior race winner was London rider Matthew Webber (Hackney GT) who survived a tangle with the bushes to win by 14 seconds from Ross Tricker (XRT/Elmy).
George Baker (King’s Cliffe Flyers) took the youth race, with Henry Perium (CC Breckland) 10th and Lewis Hardcastle (City of Norwich C&TC) 13th.
• The Five by Three MTB races and the VC Norwich Reliability Trial were both victims of the weather. Both organisers are hoping to find new dates.
• Time trialists will be converging on Carbrooke near Watton on Sunday for the annual East District award presentation and handbook distribution. There will be a Reliability Trial starting from the Village Hall at 10am. The presentation will commence at 1pm.
