When the field of the Redgrave Road Race was split by a crash some of those delayed surrendered their podium hopes but not Steve Nunn (Arctic Sram) who powered his way across to the front half of the field, paused for breath and then with a lap and a half of the Redgrave-Wortham circuit remaining, took off again.
The 49-year-old Barnet rider caught lone leader Peter Kirwan and worked with the Dublin lad for a lap. Then Nunn attacked just before the last corner and held on to take the win outside Redgrave Cross Keys. The sprint for third place went to VC Norwich rider Glyn Thomas with Martin Ruepp, currently living in King’s Lynn, fifth.
Daniel Bloy (King’s Lynn CC) crowned a successful time trial season with a win in the blue riband East District 25 mile Championship. His 54:13 scored a notable win over Peter Balls (West Suffolk Whs, 54:33) who had the consolation of being top veteran on age-standard.
It was no day for “fixed” and Mark Arnold spun and pushed his single gear to third place in 55:03 followed by Gary Rushmore (King’s Lynn CC, 56:10) Lawrence Wright (Velo Velocity, 58:02) and VV team manager Paul Jay 58:23. Elaine Roesner (Wisbech Wheelers) brought the Ladies’ championship to the Fens with her winning 1:15:58.
The East Anglian CC evening “10” was also a windy affair – headwind out, flyer home. Jim Burgess (Anglia Velo) was the winner in 21:16, by the narrowest of time trial margins – one second – from Glenn Taylor (Club Shorter Rochford), with Mark Solley (Diss CC) third in 21:42.
The National 400 kilometre Audax ride brought riders from a wide area to ride through the night on Norfolk and Suffolk lanes - or rest in the bus shelters thoughtfully highlighted on the route sheet for those in need of a shut-eye.
The final round of the Mud, Sweat and Gears MTB series was held on a spread-out course in the 1800 acre park at National Trust property Ickworth House.
29er advocate Paul Ashby (Fat Birds) won the veteran race while Wymondham rider Phil Buick (Salsa), Grand Vets winner two weeks ago at Braintree, saw 29er-mounted Andy Murrell roll away over the top of the bumps to take the win. Norwich Team CCN had Shaun Aldous take second in the Masters (30-39) with Darren Evans fourth. Elliott Lawrence (Fakenham Gas Centre) was fourth in the supporting Open race and Norwich riders Lewis Grimes (Iceni) and Mark Barnes (Pedal Revolution) were fourth and fifth respectively in Sport. Tom Fitzpatrick carried his new Strada Sport vest over the line first to win round seven of the Lotus Series ahead of team mate Liam Gentry.
