Norwich Flyers’ Alan Hill won the climactic Seventeen-Plus final at the Norwich BMX meeting after slipping inside early leader Robbie Goodman (Ipswich BMX) on the first berm and holding off challenges from Christopher Potter (Braintree) and new Flyers member Jordan Lunn.
Hill, now turned 40 but still rarely beaten by the best in this youth-dominated sport, is looking forward to the World Championships to be held in Birmingham next month.
A good entry of 93 riders including 16 girls, contested this final Winter Series race, postponed from its original February date.
Other Norwich Flyers members in top four final positions included Kyle Hill (3rd in the 8-9 age group), Morgan Dorrell who was unbeaten in the 8-9 Females, Michael Abel (4th in the 14-16) and Paul Barnard and David Howard (third and fourth respectively in Cruiser 17+).
Stephnie Scharer was fourth in 14-16 Females, though herself not yet 14 while Morgan Dorrell’s sister Eden took fifth in the Females 9-10....at the age of six.
• In the King’s Lynn CC “25” for pairs, riders Martin Long and Gary Rushmore kept the top prize in the home club with their 56:23 on day that looked spring-like, but was chilly and featured a strong tailwind to the turn and a hard return.
Second place went to Velo Velocity pair David Staff and Geoff Frost in 56:47 and third, in 58:42, to Ken Roesner (KLCC) and Richard Eve (Wisbech Whs) who didn’t find it easy keeping together on the long drags which are a feature of the Fincham to Mundford and back course. Roesner went well downhill while Eve, much the lighter of the two, bounded uphill at a pace that Roesner found hard to match.
The same north wind breathed more favourably on the Newmarket by-pass 25 mile course, where it seems to have helped more than hindered. News is emerging of some remarkable times including 51:35 from Daniel Bloy (King’s Lynn CC), 53:51 from Sheringham man Lawrence Wright, Duncan Lorne (Norwich ABC) 57:00 and three fast times from CC Breckland members – Chris Nudds 56:23. Matt Carter 56:32 and Laura Gambling 58:53.
• Following the sad death of Watton club cyclist Peter Hamon, the funeral will be a humanist service on Friday, April 20 at the Wells Cole Community Centre, Saham Toney, at 2.30pm.
• Cold, windy and fast was the verdict on the Glade Road Race for higher category riders. Norwich rider Mike Auger was second-placed Eastern RRL rider, 17th overall, such was the quality of the field. There were no Norfolk or Suffolk riders in the published result of the Eagle RC race for third and fourth cats.
