Norfolk Premier moved into the Inter-County Championship quarter-finals after a superb 30-10 on points, 207-145 on shots win against Herefordshire Premier at a neutral venue in Northamptonshire.
Norfolk took the initiative early on, winning the first session 6-2. Carter’s Trevor Brown saw an early 6-0 lead disappear as Hertfordshire’s Tony Vitale leveled the game at 7-7 after seven ends. Brown then moved up a gear or two to cruise to an 18-8 win. Halvergate’s David Lamb was level at 10-10 with two ends remaining against Fred Jolley but snatched a 12-11 win. Hevingham’s George Clarke and Carter’s Nigel Willard added a 15-6 win with Herefordshire winning the remaining pairs game against Jack Barrett and Chris Mann. Another 6-2 win followed in the second session. Halvergate’s Michael Savage, making his Premier team debut, led for Wymondham’s Debbie Phillips and Bradwell’s Keith Cooke and they produced a superb 13-6 win. Halvergate’s Steven Lamb with Carter’s Kim Bridge and Melvin Woods made it maximum points in the triples with a 15-6 win. Carter’s Jean Woods, First Bus player Bob Oatway, Wymondham’s Brian Saunders and Hempnall’s Jon Sparham have had an excellent season which continued with an 8-6 win while Herefordshire’s only win was a three shot victory against Halvergate’s Robbie Lamb, Wymondham’s Andrew Stratton and Kirby Bedon’s Phil Watson and Selwyn Goldsmith.
Herefordshire managed to share the third session 4-4 but fell further behind on shots. Wymondham’s Jack Barrett and Chris Mann made up for their earlier defeat with a stunning 20-7 win in the pairs with both players in top form but Clarke and Willard lost their pairs game 17-8. Trevor Brown lost the first four ends against Fred Jolley but there was only one player in it after that as Brown stormed to a 21-6 win.
David Lamb failed to add a second win as he slipped to a 14-10 defeat in a close game. Norfolk only needed one point from the last session to clinch victory but as in the first two sessions they won three of the four games. Robbie Lamb, Andrew Stratton, Phil Watson and Selwyn Goldsmith made up for their narrow defeat in the first half by producing a massive 20-3 win against Becci Cox’s rink that included a count of seven on the sixth end. Jon Sparham’s rink suffered a rare defeat losing 14-6 to John Stannard’s rink. Both Norfolk triples won their second game of the day as Melvin Woods won by 11-8 and Keith Cooke won by 13-10. The ICC Quarter-Finals will be played on the weekend of 23rd/24th February when Norfolk Premier will face Devon Premier. Other games will be Essex v West Sussex, Cheshire v Kent and Hampshire against either Gloucestershire or West Midlands.
