Norfolk in charge in Inter-County bowls championship after derby romp

Norfolk A moved 18 points clear at the top of Inter-County Championship Group Three after a heavy 27-13 win away to Suffolk at Felixstowe.

Norfolk outscored Suffolk on shots in all four disciplines earning them all eight bonus points.

In the opening session Sprowston’s Peter Smart beat Dennis Miller 19-8 in the singles while Chris Musk and Elaine Cole overturned a 9-1 deficit to win 24-10. Another shared session followed with Sue Hunt, Les Chadwick and Mike Boswell winning 9-8 and Elaine Oatway, Gerald Chilvers, Graham Tweed and David Dewing romping home 15-3. With Peter Smart winning 15-5 and Robin Amos winning 14-8 in the third session singles games, and Mikey George and Mark Linsdell drawing 11-11 in the pairs, Norfolk established a good lead.

The final session saw both Norfolk triples win as Mike Boswell’s triple scored a 14-8 victory and Jenny Walker, John Poynter and Colin Coman won 14-4. David Dewing’s rink trailed 11-8 going into their last end but a running wood with his last bowl saw Dewing take five shots to win 13-11.

• Thorpe Marriott are through to the Norwich Cup quarter finals after a convincing 13-3 home win against Bradwell.

Margaret McPherson, Ted Redwood and Bob McPherson won their triples games by 8-5 and 20-1 while Sylvia Turner and George Clarke won their pairs games by 14-5 and 9-3 as a depleted Bradwell side found themselves outgunned. Felthorpe pulled off a 9-7 away win at Framingham Earl after a storming finish saw them recover from 6-2 down at the break.

The opening session had seen Framingham’s triples win 12-3 and 11-1 and when Colin Emms’ pair added a 12-2 win it looked as if the home side were hot favourites to progress. The match turned on its head after the break with a 12-5 win for Mick Harris’ triple and an 8-2 win for C Bullard’s triple levelling the game. Pauline Nash and John Green’s 8-5 pairs win and a 6-6 draw achieved by T Shelley and Marjorie Hall clinched victory for Felthorpe.

Hevingham won 9-7 at First Bus after winning both pairs games in the final session. Pat Williamson and Maurice Kemp won by 12-5 and Ian MacLean and Vic Woods won by 9-3 as Hevingham finished on a high.

Bob Carter won 9-7 at Halvergate with Margaret Reynolds, Jean Woods and Robert Howlett winning twice. Coltishall won 9-7 at Horsford BC where Carol and John Aggas won 10-6 and 9-4.

• In the first round of the Norfolk County Cup Watton went through on shots after their home tie against First Bus ended in a 4-4 draw on points.

John Hunter’s 22-6 win against George Munford’s triple was the vital result that helped them to a 57-45 shots victory. Eddie Bebee’s triple scored Watton’s other win beating Colin Coman 16-7 while Bob Oatway won 19-11 and Rex Cox won 13-10 for First Bus. Coastal League leaders won by a maximum 18-0 at home to Martham while second placed Bradwell Red won 13-5 at Woodbastwick Owls. City of Norwich League leaders Costessey won 13-1 at home to Sprowston SSC but lost 11-3 at home to Horsford Heroes.

Bure League leaders Hevingham beat Coltishall 6-4 with Vic Woods’ triple winning 23-8 against Willie Jefferies. Jim Couling’s Woodbastwick triple won 15-10 as his team achieved a creditable 8-2 away win at Cromer.

Woodbastwick also won 6-4 at Anglian Windows where former Norfolk star Peter Jablonowski skipped his triple to an 18-6 win. Kirby Bedon recorded two home wins beating Anglian Windows 6-4 and Horsford BC 8-2.
