A close call as Carters win bowls pairs final at Lakeside

In the City of Norwich League the league pairs championship was held at Lakeside CC and after the preliminaries the semi-finalists were George Clarke, Janet Pinchin (Thorpe Marriott), Sue Hunt, Jean Woods (RG Carter), Trevor Brown, Nigel Willard (RG Carter), Mike and Diane Boswell (Anglian Windows).

In the all RG Carter game Willard beat Woods 7-2 and in the other semi Clarke scored two on the last end to win 5-4. The final was a close game which went down to a umpire measure on the last end, the result of which was a 5-3 win to Carters. In the league RG Carter are still top after they beat Taverham 10-4 at home. P Johnson won 19-4 but Taverham responded well and with L Sawyer winning 14-6 and B Taylor winning 12-6 there was only five shots between the teams. Second-placed Thorpe Marriott beat County Council 12-2 at home (T Turner 18-2 and G Clarke 20-8). Against First Bus at Home Marriott struggled and lost three games but in the fourth G Clarke won 14-4 to snatch the match points.

Third-placed Horsford Heroes won the Horsford derby 14-0 (R Frank 20-2, K Chapman 13-10, M Tuttle 19-6 and V Webster 18-5). Felthorpe played a double header against Anglian Windows and in the home match won 14-0 C Bullard 18-7, M Harris 14-3, M Hall 10-7 and captain J Green 12-5. In the away leg Felthorpe were beaten 12-2 as M Boswell won 23-2. The old rivals Sprowston and First Bus met at Sprowston and despite B Oatway coming from 9-1 down to win 16-10 for bus Sprowston won the other three games for a 12-2 win. At Framingham Earl Sprowston won 10-4 after P Smart had won 28-8. K Bunn topscored for Fram Earl with a 14-6 win. Deaf Sports played Jarrolds at home and were 10-4 winners with three shots between the teams.
