Some of the hottest talent from the world of tenpin bowling converged on Norwich for the British Junior Open at the Namco Funscape bowling alley in Bowthorpe.

Almost 160 youngsters from around the country, and even as far afield as Malta, came to the home of Norwich Youth Bowling Club for the competition.

The British Junior Open was held over the previous two weekends and saw Norwich YBC's youngsters enjoy plenty of success, including what they hope is a national record.

'It was brilliant, I've had lots of good feedback from all over the country and nice feedback from the Malta players, which is nice because they travelled a long way,' Norwich YBC chairman and Junior Team England head coach Neville Nock said.

'I've been asked if we'll run it again next year, so I've got to discuss that with the bowling alley, but it's looking like becoming a regular event, which is good because it's one of the top five events in the bowling calendar in this country.'

The overall prize for the tournament – a combination of an individual's best score in the singles, doubles and team events – was won by Brandon Roberts from Nuneaton with a score of 2,206.

Second was Becky Daly from Blackburn with 2,056, which was just one point better than third-placed George Ackerman from Nuneaton, with 2,055.

Norwich YBC hope that their team have set a new national record in the Division C team competition, for Peewee and Bantam age group bowlers.

The team, named The Pin Destroyers, of Jack Barwick, Dan Harding, Jake Everitt and Jack Blyth set a collective score of 1,873, to finish 333 points clear of the runners-up.

Nock continued: 'Teams used to be of five but with a drop in numbers because of the recession and things like that, teams were dropped to four because it's easier for clubs to get four players for a team.

'So our team at Peewee, which is under-11, scored 1,873, which we believe to be a record.'

The highest placed Norwich bowler was Patrick Gregory in 30th with a total of 1,796, with William Havelock three place further back with 1,742. Dereham's Kyle Crummett was 36th with a score of 1,733.

Of Gregory's performance, Nock added: 'He had a very good tournament. He's just had his exams so hasn't bowled a great deal lately, so it was nice for him to do well.'

There was a bronze medal for Norwich bowler Jake Everitt for the overall scores in the Bantam and Peewee age groups, with a 1,311 total, a place ahead of team-mate Kyle Williams in fourth, with 1,241.

Everitt also took overall and male silver in the singles in his age group, with a score of 486, with Williams again fourth, with 410.

Nicola Betts took the female overall and singles gold at Bantam and Peewee levels with her overall score of 1,120.

Another Norwich medallist was Jordan Simpson, taking silver in the Intermediate singles with his three best scores totalling 661, which also earned him the male singles gold.
