Former Norwich City defender Gary Doherty has announced his retirement from football.

The 34-year-old has been out of action since sustaining a serious knee problem in a pre-season friendly for Wycombe at Barnet.

“It’s the hardest decision for any footballer to have to make,” said the former Republic of Ireland international. “You always hope you’ll be able to retire in your own time when it’s right for you, but injury has forced my hand and it’s one of those things you have to deal with.”

Doherty – a centre-half who was sometimes deployed in attack – moved to Carrow Road from Tottenham in 2004 and two eyars later was named Player of the Year.

A popular figure, nicknamed “The Ginger Pele”, Doherty was made captain by Bryan Gunn, but left in the summer of 2010 having made 227 appearances, scoring 14 goals.

He joined Charlton and two years later joined Wycombe on loan, a deal which was made permanent.

  • Shows what Sky think of Norwich, they mentioned his retirement , as the former Wycombe and Tottenham player, no mention that he spent a long time at Norwich

  • Will always remember him for his piggy back style of pinning down an attacking player when heading the ball.

  • I don't think that any Norwich fan should argue that someone who got POSA could not have done well for Norwich END OF !!!

  • Sorry guys you are a bunch of idiots and the POS award shows that he done a good job for City otherwise he would not have got it. Suggest you get out of your armchairs and go and watch a match instead of relying on social media to keep you up to date !!!

  • @DeanConeyLegend got it right - pace of a dead rat brain of a live one. I only associate GP with bad times except that final season. Another player destroyed by THE Roedent.

  • Goals aided and abetted by great delivery from Simon Lappin, and dreadful defending. There was perfect terrace humour in the nickname.

  • The fact that he won PoS says more about the squad at that time than his ability. He was an absolute donkey who NEVER won over most of the doubters. His best trait was a big heart and willing to put himself on the line. Don't remember too many tears being shed when he moved on. He was 29, supposedly at the top of his game for a CB.....yet he was so good we flogged him to Charlton. Do me a favour.
