Tom Trybull has labelled joining Norwich City as the best decision he has made in some time – something he could celebrate by earning Championship victory over Middlesbrough.

Tom Trybull has labelled joining Norwich City as the best decision he has made in some time.

The 24-year-old German midfielder had already impressed since his successful summer trial, which has now been rewarded with a new three and a half-year deal, confirmed before kick-off on Saturday.

And Trybull celebrated with a stunning strike to earn Carrow Road victory over Middlesbrough, and a fifth win in seven Championship games.

“I’m very appreciative of my new contract and my new situation,” said Trybull. “I’m very thankful for the chance the club gave me, especially Mr Webber and our coach. I just want to be still part of the team, try to give my best every weekend.

“But also, I think I’ve earned this for what I have given in the last few years and I want to show everybody that I’m back. Especially here in England, it’s very hard every weekend to play in the Championship – so I think I deserve it.

“The last years it was a little bit difficult. Sometimes there were problems with coaches and clubs. But for me right now, I feel very comfortable here in Norwich. I feel very welcome with the supporters and our team-mates and the club. I think it’s the best decision of my last few years.”

The unsettled nature of Trybull’s recent career before moving to Norwich was arguably summed up by his situation at Dutch side ADO Den Haag last season – and what subsequently left him as a free agent in the summer.

Now the benefits of a happy, talented midfielder are being reaped by both Norwich City and Trybull’s wife-to-be Anna – with the big day scheduled for the first international break of 2018.

“For sure, the last few years were always sad,” admitted Trybull, who also spent single seasons at Greuther Furth and St Pauli after leaving Werder Bremen.

“They were not easy for me and my wife because I had some problems. I didn’t get back what I deserved normally – because everybody who knows me, knows I give everything in training every day.

“Happy wife, happy life! I’ve always said in interviews she is very important to me. She always gives me self-confidence but she is also my harshest critic and gives me a kick up the backside. She tells me to give my best at the weekend, otherwise I can’t come home!

“But then I think in the relationship it’s really helpful if you have a wife when she is always honest with you, and she helps me a lot.

“She also has stayed with me in the difficult times when we’ve struggled a little bit. So yes, I’m very happy, thankful and that’s why we’ll get married in March.”

It also underlines how tricky things had become once Trybull opted to leave Den Haag last season.

“I told Den Haag’s management I did not want to extend my contract, so that’s why I just played 23 games and didn’t play in the last three months. That’s why it was a little bit difficult for me in the summer to make a good decision.

“I was waiting for the right one and that’s why it was very easy for me to extend right now here at Norwich.

“For sure it’s not easy for a player out of contract in the summer – especially if you tell them you don’t want to extend and they put you on the sidelines. But it’s like life. I’m happy there was this possibility with Norwich.

“I didn’t know Daniel (Farke) before I came here but he took information from other people and other coaches, saw videos of how I played last season.

“And he spoke to some players from Germany, and as I said – players who have played with me know I give everything in training and there is no problem with my character. So that’s why I think he decided to sign me.”
