Seb Bassong will get a chance to impress Norwich City’s new manager Alex Neil.

The Scot confirmed on Wednesday it is a fresh start for the Canaries’ former captain and player-of-the-year after holding talks with the central defender.

More than 70% of 1,100 supporters who voted in an online pinkun.com poll this week backed Bassong for a first team recall, and Neil has told the 28-year-old the ball is now in his court.

Bassong returned from a three month loan spell at Championship rivals Watford last week after being surplus to requirements under Neil Adams.

“I’ve spoken to Seb,” confirmed Neil. “Obviously things have happened in the past. I am aware of that and he went off to Watford for a spell but I assured him as far as I am concerned all that is done and dusted and we’ll see what happens with him in the coming weeks.

“He is here at the moment and he is getting his fitness up again because he hasn’t played for a couple of weeks and we’ll see what happens.”

Neil revealed he needs more time to assess his squad over the closing weeks of the January transfer window but he is in the market for new blood.

“There will certainly be targets,” he said. “At the moment I’ve only had three days to deal with the squad so far to identify where we need to strengthen. I certainly feel there are areas we do need to strengthen, having just looked at it for this short spell, but I will need a bit more time to put plans in place. We are looking at certain targets and I have a clear idea how I want to go about things. Certainly, I think between now and the end of the window, there may well be business to be done. I have spoken to the board and they have been really supportive so far. If there is anyone who I pinpoint, they will do their utmost to try and help.”
