Norwich City is ready to offer Dutch international Ron Vlaar a return to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

The former Aston Villa centre back is edging closer to full fitness after a serious knee injury which has kept him out of the game for eight months and is available on free transfer in January after leaving the Midlands club last summer.

The Sunday Mirror report Alex Neil’s Canaries and Premier League rivals Sunderland are monitoring Vlaar’s situation, who also has offers from Germany and old club Feyenoord. The 30-year-old was reportedly in talks with Italians’ Lazio in the summer after indicating he was prepared to reject a new contract offer to stay at Villa Park, but was forced to undergo further surgery in Rotterdam during the close season after scans revealed a tear in his medial meniscus stemming from an original operation on his knee back in January.

Vlaar forged a reputation as a dominant central defender in English football who made 79 appearances for the Villans during a three-year stint and captained the side to the 2015 FA Cup final where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal.

Neil was frustrated in his search for a centre back during the summer transfer window, with the likes of Vlaar’s fellow Dutch international Virgil van Dijk, West Ham stalwart James Collins, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and Marseilles Nicolas Nkoulou all touted with potential Carrrow Road moves.

  • malaga flier, please try and get some facts right. JACOB Murphy is scoring goals for Coventry. Josh is flitting in and out of MK Dons, while they wallow in the relegation zone of the Championship. He's scored just 2 goals in 11 appearances. Where's the gamble in signing a 'FREE transfer'? Who do we 'LOAN' a free transfer from, their agent? The only gambles are that it fills 1\25th of our adult player slots and salary (which should be covered by appearance clause).

  • Sicknote or not, Ron Vlaar's wage demands would mean there is no chance of our illustrious Board considering him. Shame but true.

  • Silly comment again from our young 'friend' Kris or is it Jamie? I would suggest that whilst our young players are not good enough for the PL they are most certainly good enough for league 2. If you must comment which we hold hope you don't, then please try to be sensible. You're a year older now and must be nearing middle school. Try acting it!

  • Trying to get a comment on against "B" teams playing in any league except a reserve league. It would devalue those leagues.

  • Having reserve teams is a great idea but playing them in League 1 or 2 or the Conference would hardly be fair to the teams currently playing in those leagues. For example say Everton are in a safe mid table Premier League spot at the end of March going nowhere but Everton Reserves are second in League 2 with a match against the club who are top. Everton then pick four first team players and win seven nil. Clearly this arrangement would devalue the lower leagues as a competition. Please re-establish a proper reserve league and leave the senior non league and lower division teams their fair and meaningful competitions.

  • There seems to be a few comments about the Murphy lads, and while I agree with what you guys say about blooding the youngsters. However the article is on what we all want, and that is a defender. Potentially if we got this guy, he could be the missing link, dare I say it better than big Seb, who yesterday could have given a penalty away on his wrestling with Costa. On the injury thing with Vlarr, it,s a gamble, but 79 apps in 3 seasons with Villa equates to 26 games a season out of 38 in the Prem. So my own opinion get him, at 30 hardly over the hill.

  • goldie and i-Mac - couldn't agree more! What is the point of the Academy if players coming through never get a chance in the first team? I believe we have players out on loan who, at the very least, would prove the equal of some of our ageing squad. Josh Murphy is scoring goals galore for Coventry. Why shouldn't he be as effective as our existing front men none of whom exactly set the world alight! Toffolo is another who needs an opportunity although in his case our left side is our stronger. Vlaar is unproven post serious injury, a big gamble and not therefore a sensible signing. A loan signing at the very best. What we really need is pace and athleticism in central defence. To that end we'd be no worse off signing a good strong young player from the lower divisions who has been operating successfully in central defence. Up front Juami is worth a look. He was a big favourite at Malaga and much missed but hasn't fitted in at Southampton.

  • Well I agree about giving the Murphy twins and Toffolo a chance in the PL, but I confess I cannot recall the centre backs from that youth team??? Ron Vlaar's cv reads worse than Ryan B's for sick notes, but as Bicester canary suggests, if they could 'mesh' their injuries... (Is he a right sided CB?). We have no cover for Seb on the left? Cruciate ligament injuries tend to finish careers. Owen was never the same after his. But free transfer, pay him based on appearances and it could fill a gap?

  • L1 and L2 teams have already agreed in principle to allow Prem B teams to compete (in league if poss, but deffo in the JPT) Financially it's win \ win to them. B-teams playing in the league pyramid would demonstrate the value of money-spinning games with bigger crowds and potentially larger TV revenue. Prem U21 division just doesn't recreate the type of intense, pressured atmosphere which youngsters need to experience. Man C believe their young players need more pressure than the U21 league provides. They've now resorted to sending their best young stars on loan in Europe, with academy staff monitor their progress on scouting missions. EPPP Cat 1 clubs should push for this to happen. NCFC supporters we now will be 100% behind it.

  • I suppose it depends how much spin you want to put on - or take off - really...... The half-empty glass could be 'a thirty year old recovering from a serious knee injury and who hasn't played for eight months'. The half-full glass could be an experienced Dutch International Centre Back (who played in all seven 2014 World Cup Final games - and - who never lost a game in normal time) with three Premier League seasons, not to mention seven seasons with Feyenoord.

  • I agree with you TK, unfortunately as I have said on previous posts most clubs are not prepared to blood the young ones, so they go off and earn (or not) their reputations and we could have missed out on an academy player who could be worth millions later on, examples are Sterling and others. Fine try them out on loan to get experience and games under their belt( perhaps the reserve league should be brought back) but bring them back and try them out. I mean Jacob Murphy scored a hattrick on Saturday albeit with a lower league team but it shows he knows where the net is.

Well I suppose after over 60 years of support from the Devon Cornwall border ,and having to repeat on numerous occasions Norwich City , when asked who do you support , I can truly say Ron Vlaar who ! Whatever you do N C don't spend any money . You should have pre season and could have , now you have to spend but what will you get ? Very little . Maybe Vlaar will be the high point

  • If Vlaar is really determined to work hard, prove himself, plus has the right attitude to do everything for the "team", then this could be a could move. I guess AN knows whether this is the case or not. We do need a strong leader in the defence who will ensure the whole defensive unit plays 100% of the game and does not keep turning off for a few set-pieces or break-aways. As much as I would like to see some of our youth team players rise up and star for the first team, building the level of experience that someone like Vlaar has does not come overnight. He could be a great leader for bringing on the younger players - again, if he has the right attitude.

  • If he is indeed a free agent, surely he could be signed now rather than waiting for a transfer window. I thought we were allowed up to 25 senior players on our books, at present I think we only have 23. This is not saying I agree with getting him as I too would rather see our youth given a chance Josh & Jacob Murphy plus Toffolo surely were worth a run out. I cannot say that Redmond is looking a world beater right now and I think Josh would be more prepared to take defenders on. If we are not prepared to give the lads a go, then stop taking my forced contribution under false pretences. I said no the first time but they simply added it to the following seasons renewal price, these things should be opt in not op out.

Skill and endeavour mean more in my book. Like the Murphy's they are given a few attempts from the sub bench then come on and try too hard to impress instead of letting their natural talents shine through. Hardly a fair test.

  • A few years ago I watched city's youth team playing under NA having a great cup run , some of the players showed great promise , why are we not blooding them in to step up , we send them out on loan and then they dissappear into oblivion , these are the lads who should be stepping up to fill the gaps . Instead we go for older out of condition players who are payed mega bucks, why don't we play them even if it's a sub role now and again .Jacob is a fine example why is he not scoring for us instead of Coventry.
