Norwich City are keeping tabs on Sheffield Wednesday’s highly-rated centre-back Tom Lees ahead of the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old has been earning rave reviews in the Owls’ backline during an 11-game unbeaten run which has propelled them up the Championship table and into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup after a 3-0 win over Arsenal.

The Daily Mail claimed on Thursday afternoon Lees could be on Alex Neil’s radar ahead of the opening of the New Year transfer window. City made no secret of their bid to bring in a central defender last summer, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk heavily linked to a potential Carrow Road switch before joining Southampton from Celtic.

Michael Turner and Gary Hooper are both currently on loan at Hillsborough and City’s prospects of landing Lees could hinge on the Owls’ promotion prospects early in the New Year.

The 6ft Lees has made 59 league appearances for Wednesday after starting his career as a trainee at Leeds United before loan stints at Bury and Accrington Stanley.

  • some years ago my bank manager treated me out to a football match and lunch at norwich city, i really enjoyed the lunch, but foot ball has never been my thing. so what is my comment all about? simply this, we are all different and must all respect this, foot ball is good for norwich, and good for all you who enjoy it. respect the other guys opinion even if it differs from yours, something many of you seen totally unable to do on here.

  • Just sent a text to a good friend of mine who is a life-long Wednesday supporter - every match, home and away. His response was "Hands off - best player we have bought for years". maybe a deal is already done to include Turner and Hooper?

  • We are getting something out of the Hooper loan deal already without Lees, it's called getting utter garbage like Gary Hooper off our roster. Looks like it won't be permanent though as he can't even get a game at Sheff Wed. as there other options are WORLDS better.

  • Would be nice to think we're getting something out of the Hooper loan deal. Who knows, maybe this is already basically a done deal. Or at least a right of first refusal. I don't buy the argument that everyone in the chump is a chump standard player. He's the right age and showing bags of talent - and form. Certainly a step up on what we've got. Wonder if we'll also be going back to wolves for their striker...? I've read a lot of comments recently about our scouting system. Truth is, they take a long time to set up properly. And it makes sense we wouldn't be throwing money at that while we were in the chump. So if there's not a good one in place, we've got to go for what we know. And none of that is Neil's fault (or to my mind, anyone else's).

  • Otfbc, we are unable to make any more domestic loans, so we'd need to release wisdom or jarvis. So buying in is probably the best bet. The better than champ defender jimbob, any ideas? These rumours only stoke up the anti club moaning. My view. We need strength at the back, but t the strength is a needle in a haystack.

  • Don't you just hate these rumour mill stories, almost all of which are no more than idle speculation. If the club has anything about it, they will be looking at a whole host of players before deciding which ones they want. These stories are little more than a waste of time.

  • Oops Kent Anglian totally agree with on of your comments if only,Bruce, linagin, good old Dave Watson. What about the forwards Fashinue,Kevin Reeves,Royal,Channon,Paddon,Mcdougle on and on.In back in the day we were a well respected 1st division club, the big boys actually wanted our players, and we could attract big names as well,OK coming to the end of their career s but they still came.I can remember FA cup 3rd round tie away at Yeovil Town back in the seventies,my grandad got me tickets as he was a Yeovil Town season ticket holder he said the whole town for weeks before the tie was going nuts, they couldn't wait to see the likes of ReevesForbes, bond,Keelin, peters, fash,Paddon, ect they knew all the players, who would they know now, maybe Redmond, ruddy, that's it really.Oh bring back those days

  • Yes all these rumours Archant must think it would keep us happy , no any more , it would take more than a Champ player to get me excited , Yes another smoke screen to put our competitors off the track of our real targets , if we were after any body good would AN let on no I don't think so , as for Jamie Vardy from Fleetwood what a player he's turned out to be , now thinking the CB from Weds could be a real Jewel otbc

  • In fairness, Dave 123, when Paul Lambert was Manager, most of his transfer business was completed early in the 'window', so it can be done. Just our recent history is not so good. Business done early in January could give any new players an extra 3 or 4 games, which could make all the difference.

  • Good idea to be looking at players who are performing well in the Championship, especially with half a season behind them. Almost all other PL clubs cannot see further than the European leagues - so few players were transferred from the Football League to the PL during the Summer transfer period, you could count them on one hand. There must be some good players ready to step up and be within our price and wage limits - better than some loanees wanting to stretch their legs. We have picked up some great players from the lower leagues in the past, why not now? Oh for a new Steve Bruce or Andy Linighan to line up in central defence...or a new Grant Holt up front. Leicester took a punt on Jamie Vardy from Fleetwood - not a bad bit of business.

  • What's the point in shelling out for an unproven defender? 'Could hinge on the Owls’ promotion prospects' more like could hinge on Norwich's relegation predicament. Jack Hobbs of Forest is 'highly rated' too, but I'd rather see us get Calum Chamber or Steven Caulker on loan or any other bench warmer in the Premiership - guess its down to wages.

  • This is far from pointless as those have said below (probably Weds fans) based on recent loans, but I was hoping for far, far better than another champ defender. Can't see him plugging the gaping holes we have in def. We need to be looking at quality players whose contracts are entering 18 months left in Jan to knock a few mil off, not teams like Weds. Just another backwards step.
