Alex Neil’s patient pursuit of Steven Naismith appears to be drawing to a happy conclusion.

The Guardian claims Norwich City have agreed a deal in principle to sign the Everton midfielder for £8million once the latest transfer window opens on January 2.

But the Canaries still face stiff competition from a host of clubs – including Premier League relegation rivals Sunderland, Swansea City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United – to gain the attacking midfielder’s signature.

The Scotland international is said to be keen on securing a move away from Goodison Park after only starting four top-flight games this season. And although the Toffees turned down a bid from Norwich in the summer, thought to be worth £7m, Naismith’s manager Roberto Martinez is now thought to be less desperate about keeping hold of the 29-year-old.

Speaking earlier this month the Everton boss, who only used the Scot for 25 minutes during yesterday’s 4-3 defeat at home to Stoke, said: “That’s something (Naismith’s future) we need to look into whenever that situation arises. It happened in August, it wasn’t the right time. We’re going to see how the next three or four weeks go.

“It’s so important to have a strong squad. We’ve got a period of a lot of games in a short amount of days and every single player will have a very important role in those weeks.

“So I’m sure in four or five weeks we’ll have a clear idea of where we are and it’ll be the right time to make a decision.”

Naismith memorably scored a hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Chelsea earlier this season but has not started a game since the 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United on October 17.

The Scot further fuelled the speculation about his departure from Merseyside when he said: “When Norwich were interested in me in the summer, it was the manager who said he didn’t want it to happen. But as a player you need to think about all your options.

“The manager said we’d speak about it again come January time so we’ll do that. At the moment I’m just concentrating on playing my football as part of a great squad and hopefully if I get my chance to play again, I take it.

“But you’ve got to weigh up all your options and see where you’re at.”

City boss Neil has made no secret of his desire to strengthen in the forthcoming window after missing out on several key targets before the campaign got under way in August.

Norwich have already agreed the permanent signing of loan winger Matt Jarvis from West Ham for £2.5m and are keen to strengthen their squad as they look to move away from the drop zone.

  • Why on earth would we won't to sign Steven Naismith (29), we certainly have enough capable midfielders. I feel that we really have to get rid of the dead wood. Then sign someone who can really enhance our chances of staying up

  • Far from ranting, I think dave123's post was spot on this time. What I read here is hyper-euphoria over the journalists' rumour mill. And I'm not moaning, nor complaining about a board that have managed things pretty well over the last 5 or 6 years (save for Ed's appt.) But some of you guys get so excited over gossip about a 29 yr old not good enough to get a start in a mid-table Everton team; that you are setting yourselves up for disappointment, which you will no doubt vent on the board come the 1st Feb.

  • Some interesting comments and mostly positive re Naismith possibly signing for us, which I think is excellent news. Also, the Murphy twins are both on a 'season long loan', so couldn't be brought home. On another note, I don't feel Redmond played too badly against Villa - not his best game, so maybe he'll 'turn it on' against Saints!!

  • AN and the board will be goin mad. Whoever leaked this story, and NCFC would want it kept super quiet, needs a serious talking too. Hmm Naismith's agent methinks. The auction for Naismith will really start on Jan 2nd. This is no way a done deal, and Norwich are now at a distinct disadvantage? Hold your breath, this is gonna be a mad window?

  • This sounds like the right move, we need to keep making upgrades but we are on a budget. Brady, Jarvis, Naismith are quality players that need the right environment to show their full potential. We must look the best prospect out of the other teams mentioned. Don't worry about a thing, every little thing is going to be alright.

  • My water's tell me this is going to be a great window for us. I believe we just mussed out on one or two signings (such as Naismith) in the last window due to timing. It looks like some business has been concluded behind the scenes and prep'd ready for January. We may well see 15-20m coming into the club through transfers out (plus saved salaries) I can see us spending 30m in total by the time a striker + cb are added!....will that be enough for our supporters to "support" our Team and Board?....I really hope so

  • I can’t understand why the desperate need to strengthen in the goalkeeper position has slipped under the rumour radar. It may be more glamorous to speculate about signing free-scoring strikers and creative midfielders but we can’t ignore the glaringly obvious (Declan Rudd’s good progress notwithstanding …). 20 points at this stage is not bad at all. Factor in that Ruddy’s errors (eg West Ham away, Man City away, Arsenal home) have led to the loss of at least 5 points and all the more credit to the team’s performances as a whole. Remember Butland’s performance for Stoke at Carrow Road? Now, if we’d had a keeper like that from the beginning of the season and we’d be pretty much home and dry already.

  • Agreed, a very good move. In terms of other signings, while Ryan Bennett is finally fulfilling his potential, and Bassong is just about good enough, there remains a clear need for cover at centre back: Martin is clearly not up to the job. And a striker. Not too much to ask, is it, Mr Balls?

I think that AN knows wes has maybe 12-18 months left in the tank and VOO appears to be the long term replacement this is a brilliant bridge. And along with jarvis, pinto and ranocchia (see read Norwich site) proves a number of things - 1. The board are supporting AN to the hilt 2. We are looking for quality 3. Cityman might finally stop his anti board rhetoric. 4. Please NOT caulker. • My question is, where does he fit inplay? Generally at the moment the manager likes to play one up front, someone big who can hold the ball up. I think he will be a good signing for us, but at the moment we have Hooper, RVW, Grabban and Lafferty who can't even get on the bench most games (or have been loaned out). Does this mean AN will finally play 2 up front?

  • If this is true would be a very good signing for us, He offers high work rate, a very good team player, isn't a prolific goalscorer but will chip in with a few goals now again, Will fit n easily with the lads already their, We can recoup most of what were likely for him with the sale on Grabban, hopefully we can get the 5-6 million Bournemouth were willing to pay, and that will be a good deal done, Kemp the signings coming lads, 3-4 more would be brilliant,
