Rumour mill: Steven Naismith deal stalls; Norwich City step up Dwight Gayle chase; James Tarkowski joins the list

Norwich City may miss out on long-term transfer target Steven Naismith, with reports the Scottish international is poised to snub a potential Carrow Road move.
The Mirror and Skysports claim a proposed Everton switch is in serious doubt and Naismith could now wait until the summer to resolve his Toffees’ future. City were knocked back in the last transfer window but had returned with a reported £8m offer for the out-of-favour Scottish international.
Premier League rivals Stoke City and Sunderland have also been touted with a January move for the midfielder, but there are also doubts whether the Scot is willing to uproot his young family from the north-west.
Naismith is currently out with an ankle injury but Everton boss Roberto Martinez admits the Scot is aware of interest.
“There’s going to be a lot of rumours and speculation but I just want him fully fit for the squad. He has an ankle niggle,” he said, on Tuesday. “If anything happens before the window closes, we will be the first to announce it. As we all know, the situation with Steven started in the window when there was an approach. We always do our business in a quiet manner.
“I have a real enjoyment working with Steven. An incredible work-rate, an understanding of the game. He is huge. But in the modern game, we know situations can change, we have people in attacking places which means he isn’t getting as much game time as he wants. At the end of the window, we’ll know where we are.”
Meanwhile, the Croydon Advertiser report Norwich have made a fresh enquiry for Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle. The ex-Peterborough hitman was another on their summer target list, with a proposed £10m move to Norwich in the final days of that window falling through when Eagles’ boss Alan Pardew was unable to bring in reinforcements. Pardew has made it clear he wants fresh firepower this month and Gayle, who is on the comeback trail from a hamstring injury, could be surplus to requirements.
Alex Neil is in the market for a striker after sanctioning Lewis Grabban’s £8m return to Bournemouth this week while both Kyle Lafferty and Gary Hooper continue to be strongly linked with moves away from the club.
Finally, Brentford’s highly-rated centre-back James Tarkowski may be on the Canaries’ radar. The Bees reportedly rejected a £2.5m bid in recent days from Championship promotion hopefuls Burnley for the 23-year-old.
Skysports’ reporter Lyall Thomas claims Norwich are monitoring the situation and have made contact with Tarkowski’s representative. The Manchester-born defender has been an ever-present for the Bees this season and played in both league games against Norwich last season, including the 2-1 Carrow Road win for the visitors in January 2015.
