Stone's exit has was confirmed by City at lunchtime, with the club preparing for its annual general meeting, which is expected to be held next month.
For supporters the news has sparked speculation about who will replace Stone on the club's board of directors and why the change has happened at a time when progress has finally started to arrive on the pitch, after a tough transitional season.
