Norwich City transfer rumours 2017: Martin Olsson ‘£5m fee agreed’ for move to Premier League strugglers Swansea as Paul Clement’s first signing

Norwich City have reportedly agreed a £5m fee with Premier League strugglers for left-back Martin Olsson.

That is according to Telegraph journalist John Percy, who broke the news on Twitter this lunchtime – with The Mirror also reporting the Swans were closing in on signing the Canaries’ Sweden international.

Olsson signed a new one and a half-year deal with City, which was announced in November.

However, the left-back came close to joining Swansea two years ago and it seems that interest has been rekindled this window, with new Swans boss Paul Clement eager to make his first signing.

Swansea are under serious threat of being relegated from the top flight, and want the 28-year-old to step following the loss of form from Neil Taylor – who also broke his cheekbone in training this morning.

It’s been an afternoon of speculation for the Canaries, with three big names linked with possible January exits and Barnsley striker Sam Winnall a reported target this month.

With fellow left-sided defensive cover Robbie Brady being heavily tipped for a move away from Carrow Road and a £12m price tag slapped on his head, it’s hard to imagine City boss Alex Neil being able to afford the departure of both players this window – certainly without bringing in replacements.

Brady serves the final game of his three-match ban on Saturday, when City head to the Championship’s bottom club, Rotherham United.

Brady was sent off in the goalless draw at Brentford on New Year’s Eve, with the Canaries’ subsequent appeal to the FA failing to overturn the decision.

Olsson played the full 90 minutes of City’s FA Cup third round draw at home to Southampton at the weekend.

  • Once again, this transfer window will give an insight to the true ambitions of this Club. IF Olsson and Brady are both sold and the squad is not reinforced with quality and motivated players then it will be obvious that the Owners, the Board and the Manager are happy with mid table Championship status and mediocrity. Just circling the plug-hole waiting to be sucked down the gurgler.

I don't want players at the club who don't want to be there but I just hope we replace them with suitable replacements...it just seems to me...we start to make progress within the club and it's 2 steps forward and 10 back...I look at teams no bigger than us (like Southamptons and Watfords) all doing it right and making the right noises and we're NO where near being like them in the near future...where if we'd have invested quicker and more wisely...we could have been...once again N.C.F.C. leave it too late again...I despair!!!

  • Interesting window this is turning out to be..... surely Olsson is the one defensive player NC should be keeping?, with Brady and Bassong possibly leaving, it makes even less sense. In fact the one player at the Club that should be kept is Olsson, or not? I admit I only see things from afar, and can get a distorted view, but goals are now being scored, but not enough to bale out a shocking defensive record. I imagine you could afford to lose Ruddy and Bassong, but would Bennett, Martin and Whittaker cope?, mmmmm. Whittaker has not been deemed good enough this season, and Bennett is a choker. Now a forward from Barnsley is being courted, no offence to him or Barnsley but NC isn't exactly a step up, and its smacks of an ambition less move from Norwich. Naismith may not be perfect, but he can play a bit [less than when he arrived maybe], why let him go?

Why aren't we clearing out Whitts, Bassong, Turner, Martin etc... to the lower leagues on free transfers and paying the diff in wages perhaps? Time for 3 at the back then! The only alternative as the Whittaker option means trouble?

So, we will probably be left with Whittaker as our only option. yes he is a good crosser of the ball but it is his lack of pace that is so worrying. Anyone in for Naismith? I thought not!

To have cover like Whittaker on the books is reasssuring, one of our long term stalwarts who speaks and understands the lingo that is the manager's native tongue, this I believe has been the reason for our demise due to the players not understanding him.
