Chris Martin is the real deal for Norwich City boss Neil Adams.

The Canaries’ academy graduate will spearhead Derby County’s frontline in Saturday’s Championship reunion against the club that nurtured him from the age of 10.

The 26-year-old’s Carrow Road career stalled after playing a key part in City’s 2010 League One title success but Martin has emerged as one of the Championship’s most potent strikers and become a Scottish international since his exit.

“He has done really well has Chris. We had him here as a youngster and we brought him through into the first team, but he has just matured and developed his game now to the level he is at,” said Adams. “He scored goals for fun while he was here in our first team and he has carried that on. He is strong, he links the play well and he is a focal point for them. The fact he has played up top on his own for Derby for so long shows you how much faith they have him in.

“Occasionally they have given him a partner but he has scored a lot of goals working that role up top on his own.”

Adams knows the scale of the task this weekend against a Championship promotion rival after his spying mission to watch the Rams’ midweek Capital One Cup exit to Chelsea.

“I went there on Wednesday and they have some good players but they also have their weaknesses,” he said. “Obviously we are confident after our last two games but we know it will be a really tough match. We have to maintain our standards from the second, half last week but it will be two good teams on show.”

  • our back four has improved last two games with Carlos playing well i agree with other posters it would be strengthened more with Russ at RB wouldn't that open a slot at CB for Ryan Bennet and with Olsen looking back to his old self last week suddenly a great looking championship back four in front of Ruddy whom seems in last couple of games to have regained his form aswell

  • Because he scored a lot of goals for us and is a local lad picking up on his career somewhere else. It's called journalism Mellow Steady Yellow On. The same happened with Holty last week. No s*** Sherlock.

  • Why the interest in Chris Martin? He's hardly Suarez. If the team selection is spot on and we play as we can we will come away with the three points. OTBC!!!

  • I'm hoping we can keep CM quiet while our midfield and forwards plunder the Derby back line. A family day out for us and a chance for City to give my son some ammunition to the Derby juice takers at his work and uni. Keep the same team as the previous two matches and vary with the long ball and we could nick this one. 1-2 possibly, setting up nicely for Millwall and Reading.

  • Nailed on as usual Matt, I also hope GossV is right in that Cuellar is tasked with the job of marking him but I still want to see another centre back in there with Martin moving to right back.

  • Of course it was right for him and us at the time to move on. After his loan spell at Swindon and then on to Luton at this point he maybe realised that he had to grow up. Clubbing and pubbing on a Friday night and,I believe a court case for ABH had to stop.

  • Anyone with any connection to the local licensed trade will known Matt is 100% right. We were all tearaways when we were younger to a varying degree I am sure. He made the right decision like Matt said. I wish him well apart from against us.

  • Agreed Matt. At the time he left most posters felt he had had enough chances here and wished him well. You may remember that he left shortly after a loan spell at Swindon where he was heavily criticised for his attitude by Di Canio.

  • Its easy for people to keep saying "oh hes banging in the goals now", but I still feel it was right for him to move on. From a personal POV he was getting in a lot of trouble with the local pubs. If you want to look at just the footballing side of things, at Premier League level he simply wasnt quite up to that grade at the time. IMO he isn't now either. At Championship level hes lethal but from what I saw of him for NCFC home and away at PL level, for Derby recently against Chelsea and for Scotland against decent nations, he just doesn't quite seem at that level. All opinion of course but at the time I felt it was right for him to leave NCFC as he simply wouldn't get the game time with us. Of course we all know he will score tomorrow. Blooming curse!

  • I am also looking forward to tomorrows game. Haven't been to this ground so hope I don't jinx it for us. These former canary players seem to crop up regularly. We must keep a tight rein on him. He seems to just wander about a lot then, bang he catches you out when you least expect it. Its a shame we didn't have him now when he has got over his wild days.

  • Also looking forward to the game, live on Sky, and watching from sunny Spain. Yep, superman, we cannot afford to just put in a one-half performance. We must be out the blocks from the start and press them high up the pitch, which means players will need to work a sight harder than some have done in a lot of games this season.

  • "Scored goals for fun in the first team"?? In League one yes but then he stalled. Paul Lambert couldn't get him to play so Useless Hughton had no chance. I am glad to see that he has turned it around but not against us please.

  • I'm really looking forward to the game tomorrow (but not getting up at 5.30 ). If we play like the 2nd half v Huddersfield then no problem----repeat the first half display ,then forget it. Still going to be a good day out.

  • I am sure when he was booked in the Capital Cup on Wednesday, it showed it was his 5th booking and therefore would miss this game
