Norwich City have confirmed the signing of Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford on loan until the end of the season.

The move follows intense speculation in recent days linking the 22-year-old with a move to Carrow Road.

Canaries boss Alex Neil told the club’s official website: After further bolstering his attacking options following the recent signing of Steven Naismith, City boss Alex Neil added: “Patrick is a player who excelled last season and we are pleased to have the opportunity to bring him in.

“He’s a young forward determined to make his way in the game, and adds competition for us at the top end of the pitch.”

Bamford had a temporary spell with Crystal Palace this season, where he made six Barclays Premier League appearances.

He was on loan to Middlesbrough last season where he scored 17 goals in the Championship matches and was named the division’s Player of the Year.

He came face to face with Neil’s City side in the Championship play-off final at Wembley which the Canaries won 2-0.

Bamford said: “I’m really happy to be here, and the sooner I’m able to get involved the better.

“That’s what I want to do personally, but it’s also about helping Norwich to get the points required to stay in the league.”

  • MY. It comes back to defensive coaching, as many have said on here. I am not clear on how the defensive coaching works at Carrow Road - is there a specific coach responsible for the defence, or is it multiple people giving input? I would hope there is one person responsible, and if so, why hasn't that person come under fire. If it is AN and as we have heard "players are not doing what he says", then why aren't they being dropped, or is this Bennett was dropped last week? Can't believe anyone is of the oppinion Martin is doing what he is told and Bennett is not? Anyone got info on this?

  • CityCanary, Wes has 7 assists plus 3 goals. Most recently that defence splitting pass for Naismith's goal. Then there was that perfectly weighted chip for Mbokani against Villa. Not to mention that he is almost always available to receive the ball and provide the link up play. I guess some of us see 'impact' differently? I watched MK Dons lose to Chelsea today. A difficult game for the Dons, but Josh Murphy particularly disappointing :(

  • What I find most interesting on these comments is genuinely we have two conflicting opinions of 'we must defend better and buy a CB' to 'why don't we ever play 2 up front'. I guess there might be some that want both, but my argument is it won't matter if we by 3 new CB's and play 3 up front, unless the team learn to defend better (not just individuals). It won't matter what formation we play if keep making mistakes and I think Naismith hit the nail on the head when he said we lacked communication (and leadership) on the field. I do however believe this can be fixed and I do have optimism that we potentially have a decent team.

We should however bear in mind that Col U have not had a decent keeper since Mike Walker so it may just be that he gets his boots on the right feet that impresses the 3,000 faithful at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. Bamford has already shown that he was a good Championship striker last year ( so was CJ), but didn't cut the mustard in the Premier League with Palace and talking to some Palace fans in London, they say he won't make the grade at this level. We have an ever improving am okapi, with CJ as back up, Laffers who has never been given a fair chance and Naismith, Jarvis, Brady who can play further forward with Olsen behind him, Redmond and now Bamford. That seems like an overkill that smacks of desperation to me

I'm excited to see where he slots in - after his experience with Palace, he must have been given an assurance that he wouldn't simply be a bench warmer. Many have their merits ( although I suspect some are just to wind up old adversaries ) What cannot be disputed though is that NCFC as a whole are in a much better position than at the same time last year. The board looks more professional & balanced , the balance sheet SHOULD be healthier , the playing squad is much stronger , we have a manager for the future &the supporters in general don't seem so restless . It can be argued that the present team & manager will struggle in the EPL , but if we can survive this season I believe the future is bright. What cannot be argued is that we all would have grabbed our present position at the start of 2015 OTBC

Another CB would be nice as well, yes we are scoring goals from other positions, but one striker upfront is not working. It will be interesting to see the starting line up Tuesday, if it's a half hearted approach, then we need to start worrying. That means AN is choosing the games he can win, at this time of the season can end in tears. I wish Bamford luck, but truthfully can't see what he offers ahead of our current crop.

Interestingly, Diouf was a used substitute against Palace yesterday and today the Telegraph claims that Stoke have rejected a £10m offer from an overseas club for him. So how "close" we were to getting Diouf, who knows. Saying all that, I think Bamford is a welcome addition to the squad. He will hopefully give us an extra dimension to the strike force. In fact I am excited by the signings we have made during this window. Maybe we haven't got everyone we wanted but we have made significant progress. AN is building his own team now. He just needs to get the new boys quickly integrated, but he also needs to lay down the law to those who think they can ignore the manager's game plan and do their own thing. I feel positive about the future of the club and I truly believe we are going in the right direction. Everyone of our squad is capable of playing well, they just need more self belief! Surely for him to be a proper success he needs to settle at a club and not just a temporary addition. I think Chelsea would have sold him at the right price and with the buy back clause put in. Trouble is if he is a big success then Chelsea will put the price up if we want to buy him at the end of the season. I think a loan deal would have been better for a centre back , which is where we need more strengthening.

I'd certainly not have advocated signing him full time , even if Chelsea did want to sell, so a 5 month loan is a fair compromise. We must now be getting pretty close to our allowance for registered players allowed for the Prem squad. How many is it these days...25? Does anyone know how we stack up in that regard ? Mulumbu for example was let go by WBA, Dorrans sold on relatively cheaply and now we have a player Palace decided not to keep. He may well go on to be a success, even at Premiership level, as Harry Kane now has, but do we really need to progress players for other clubs to reap the benefits. I feel the same about Wisdom and now we have purchased Pinto, do we really need him as cover for cover. For me, our biggest need was proper cover for Tettey, AN obviously does not see Mulumbu filling that roll and neither can Dorrans or Howson. • I agree that 4 4 2 is unlikely and that 4 5 1 (with two defensive midfielders) is way more likely, but I see 4 4 1 Naismith) 1 (Mbokani or Jerome) being a formation we'll see a few times before the end of the season, with Bamford being thrown on late when chasing the game.

  • Don't expect them to get a result against spurs whatever team they put out, spurs are far too good and improving all the time, still can't understand why the city manager still has no idea what his strongest team is, its worrying really at this time of the season, I can see both Sunderland and Newcastle starting to pick up points, its going too be a close run thing.

  • I have my doubts about Bamford, and thought he was petulant at the PO Final. But I'm right behind him and hope he can make the step up to Premier League level. Both full back positions are a problem, as the emphasis has been on the incumbents bombing upfield to cross and overlap. I'd like to see more defensive duties from whoever is picked, especially in a 4 4 2 formation. Bassong needs a rest (enter a Bennett Klose partnership) and Howson looks jaded, so VOO might be a reasonable replacement. Finally, I'd like to see another defensive midfielder and CB added to the squad, but that's being greedy and the recruitment has been encouraging this window - let's hope Jarvis regains his pre-injury form soon.

  • I see Bamford as 3rd choice behind Mbok and CJ, allowing Lafferty to find game time elsewhere. CityCanary, reference your line-up. I doubt AN will suddenly switch to two strikers, especially against Spurs, and I doubt he will consider Bamford ready to start considering how late his signing? I would prefer Wisdom to Pinto, but AN will probably go for Pinto, and I predict Spurs will run passed him as easily as Liverpool did. Why no room for Wes in your 11? As for those who think 3 days after signing a 22 yr old, who couldn't cut it at Palace, that he should replace Mbokani seems brainless to me. (IMHO)

  • Still worried about central defence and after watching Colchester on the box, I also hope we do not have a goalkeeper injury necessitating Jake Kean on the bench. I know Colchester lost both their centre halves to injury but poor old Jake looked hopeless. Anybody else see it?

  • Bamford is a quality player, but why are we signing him on loan? If he does well that's good but he'll be going back to Chelsea , and as per previous comment , how is this going to sit with Jerome & Mbokani. Can we not afford to buy players ? It just seems a temporary thing that leaves you feeling a bit empty , signing a player but not really if you know what I mean.

  • Team for Spurs; Rudd, Pinto, Bennett, Klose, Olssen, Jarvis (right), Tettey, Howson, Brady (left), Naismith, Bamford. How does that sound? Wouldn't particularly want to see Mbokani, or Wes dropped, but would like to see if the team I picked could do a job! (Only picked Howson if Tettey's playing, he needs someone covering as he doesn't track back well)

  • Also I would like to say a lot of blame was placed on the defence against the 'Pool but several of those goals were by their players arriving in our box without being tracked back by our midfield. Our midfield let the defence down several times resulting in at least two of their goals!

  • May be able to play a 442 with Bamford, remember our drubbing at Middlesbrough during his prolific spell. Fingers crossed. Well it seems like we have half a new squad, let's hope they can jell and play up to their full potential. Looks like the management are up for the battle. Let's get behind them Tuesday, who knows what the team will be. Ruddy ?, Pinto, Klose, Bassong, Olson, Jarvis, Naismith, Tettey, Brady, Jerome and Bamford ? So many options, let's just hope the right ones are left out !!

  • Brilliant news. Shows that our board has got ambition and really want to keep us in this league. Maybe the new chairman has helped, maybe it is Tom, but whoever has been driving for these signings I have a lot of respect for. Now lets pull things together and move on to big successes. Klose and Bamford to make their debut's on Tuesday? Maybe we should go for a 4-4-2 formation because I don't really want to see Mbokani dropped. For tottenham: Pinto, Bennett, Klose, Ollson, Tettey, Howson, Naismith, Brady, Mbokani, Bamford. Any Thoughts?

  • A good addition...don't think he got much of a chance at Palace but certainly done it for 'Boro last season...bring in Mame Diouf from Stoke City as well and that's us pretty much covered (although another 'centre back' still wouldn't go amiss in my opinion!!!) OTBC

  • This is very positive. Ok Palace fans say he is too lightweight and not up to Premier League standard but I would rather us make that decision not them. We have bolstered all areas that needed it whilst not selling. Shame this wasn't all sorted in the summer but now it's time to accept we have taken action, been backed by the board and get behind the team like never before.

  • Can't see any harm in this at all. Got to be a better option than Lafferty as our 4th striker and could be a real bonus if he lives up to the potential. Well done the board, I think that our window is now closed - for incoming players at least. Shame we waited until January to do this business.

  • We have now added players in all the areas that most people felt needed strengthening, that speaks for a willingness to invest. Now this new-look squad needs pulling together and drilling to be flexible in defence and attack. We can do this. Let's not give Bamford the sort of reception that some gave to Harry Kane before he got injured.
