Simon Clark picked up his first trophy as King’s Lynn Town manager when his side beat off competition from the young guns of Norwich City and Glasgow Rangers to claim the King’s Lynn Town Challenge Cup.

The Linnets beat the young Canaries 4-1 on Saturday to book their place in the final against a Rangers side which had disposed of Legia Warsaw Under-23s in Friday’s opener, winning 3-2 on penalties after they had finished 2-2.

The Polish side beat City 3-0 in Sunday’s third-place play-off before Lynn overcame a testing challenge from Rangers, a match which was settled by a Ryan Fryatt goal after just 10 minutes.

In baking conditions at The Walks, Rangers gave as good as they got, but the experience of the hosts saw them through. Fryatt’s winner came after Michael Clunan’s corner had been headed back into the mix by Michael Gash and, after a little bit of head tennis, the central defender turned and smashed a half volley into the roof of the net.

Lynn knocked it around well and might have extended their lead only for Jordan Richards to blaze over from 10 yards just before half-time.

Lynn keeper Alex Street did well to turn away Stephen Kelly’s shot, while Rangers’ appeals for a penalty after sub Matty Castellan bundled over Adedapo Awokya-Mebude fell on deaf ears.

Lynn boss Clark made a raft of changes with 20 minutes remaining and Rangers took the initiative, without ever really looking like scoring.
